Senior Web Developer/ 2 days ago
Quick Summary
Lead the development and technical management of our Shopify-based e-commerce storefront. While Shopify is the primary platform today, we need a developer who thinks beyond any single platform — someone with the full-stack e-commerce architecture skills to build, scale, or migrate an online store independently if the business requires it. You should be equally comfortable customising a Shopify Liquid theme, spinning up a WordPress site, or architecting a standalone e-commerce application from the ground up using modern frameworks and databases.
You also own the group’s web infrastructure: hosting, domains, DNS, SSL, and security across all properties. Hands-on coding daily.
Key Responsibilities
- Shopify storefront (primary focus): Theme customisation and development (Liquid, HTML/CSS/JS), custom sections and templates configurable by non-technical staff, mega-menu, product page enhancements, campaign landing pages (≤48hr turnaround), app stack integration and conflict resolution, checkout and payment gateway optimisation.
- Full-stack e-commerce capability: Ability to architect and build a complete e-commerce solution independently: database design, product catalogue, cart and checkout logic, payment gateway integration, user authentication, order management, and inventory sync. This is critical for evaluating platform decisions, building custom functionality Shopify cannot support, and ensuring we are never locked into a single vendor.
- Multi-platform experience: Maintain the WordPress corporate site including updates, security hardening, and plugin management. Comfortable working across WooCommerce, Magento, or other e-commerce platforms as reference points for best practices and potential migration evaluation.
- Hosting, domains & DNS: Manage all group domains (registration, renewal, DNS records including SPF/DKIM/DMARC for email deliverability). Configure and maintain hosting for non-Shopify properties. CDN setup (Cloudflare), backups, and disaster recovery.
- Web security: SSL certificate management, 2FA enforcement on all admin accounts, vulnerability patching within 48 hours, access control register, DDoS protection, PCI DSS awareness, and first-response for any security incident.
- Performance & technical SEO: Core Web Vitals optimisation (LCP <2.5s), image compression pipeline, structured data (JSON-LD), sitemaps, canonicals, redirect management, and crawl error resolution.
- Analytics & tracking: GA4 enhanced e-commerce via GTM, Meta Pixel, conversion tracking accuracy (<5% variance vs Shopify).
- Mobile app coordination: Product feed consistency between Shopify and iOS/Android app, deep-linking, and smart app banners.
Required Skills
- E-commerce development: Advanced Shopify (Liquid, Storefront/Admin APIs, CLI) as the primary platform. Proven ability to build a complete e-commerce site from scratch using at least one modern stack (e.g., Node.js/Express + database, Django, Laravel, or headless commerce with React/Next.js + API). Understanding of payment gateway integration (Stripe, PayPal, Checkout.com), cart logic, and order workflows at the code level — not just plugin configuration.
- Front-end: HTML5, CSS3 (Flexbox, Grid, variables), JavaScript (ES6+), responsive mobile-first design. Ability to translate briefs into pixel-perfect, high-converting pages.
- Back-end & databases: At least one server-side language (Node.js, Python, PHP, or Ruby). Working knowledge of relational databases (MySQL/PostgreSQL) and basic API design (REST). Enough to build custom middleware, integrations, or standalone tools when Shopify apps fall short.
- Platform breadth: Hands-on experience with at least one additional e-commerce platform beyond Shopify (WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, or custom-built). WordPress development including theme/plugin work and security hardening.
- Infrastructure: DNS management (A/CNAME/MX/TXT/SPF/DKIM/DMARC), cloud hosting (AWS, DigitalOcean, or managed), Cloudflare CDN, SSL/TLS, Linux CLI basics, email infrastructure.
- Security: WordPress hardening, OWASP Top 10 awareness, access control & 2FA, vulnerability scanning, incident response fundamentals.
- Tools: Git version control, GTM, GA4 e-commerce tracking, Google Search Console. Comfortable with technical SEO implementation.
Preferred Skills:
- Shopify Plus (Scripts, Flow)
- Custom Shopify app development (Node.js/Remix)
- Headless commerce (Hydrogen, Storefront API)
- React/Vue/Next.js
- Docker
- CI/CD pipelines
- API integration with ERP systems
- Penetration testing
- Figma
