Program Overview

Peraton is seeking a Senior Level Cloud Engineer (Platform/Infrastructure Lead) to support the NOAA AWIPS program. AWIPS is the mission-critical forecasting system utilized in over 150 National Weather Service offices nationwide. This role is crucial for the AWIPS modernization and cloud-ready transformation phase.

About The Role

This Senior Cloud Engineer will guide the design, deployment, and optimization of cloud infrastructure to strengthen forecasting speed, resilience, and scalability.

What You'll Do: Cloud Engineering & Optimization

Designs, implements, and manages secure, scalable, and efficient cloud infrastructure and systems. Key tasks include:

  • Migrating on-premises systems to the cloud.
  • Automating infrastructure deployments.
  • Optimizing cloud cost and troubleshooting cloud-related issues.
  • Ensuring strict adherence to security policies.

Responsibilities: Cloud Architecture & Leadership

  • Architect and manage multi-cloud environments (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Implement automation, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), containerization, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Ensure robust cloud security, identity management, and compliance standards are met.
  • Monitor and tune cloud systems for optimum performance, identifying single points of failure and implementing strategies to increase performance, reliability, and scalability.
  • Support critical application migration and modernization initiatives.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including developers and product teams, to integrate cloud services and streamline workflows.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentor junior engineers, and drive best practices in cloud engineering, including automation, CI/CD pipelines, and configuration management.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 12 years of relevant experience with a BS/BA, 10 years with an MS/MA, or 7 years with a PhD. (4 additional years of relevant experience will be considered in lieu of a bachelor's degree).
  • Prior experience utilizing cloud technologies including AWS, Azure, and Google.
  • Experience using coding languages such as Perl, Java, PowerShell, PHP, Ruby, Python, etc.
  • Experienced with Cloud Architecture patterns and strategies (including IaaS, PaaS, Security, Compute, Storage, and networking).
  • Demonstrated experience with Amazon Web Services, code-defined infrastructure, configuration management tools, and CI/CD.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience supporting NOAA programs.
  • Certified Cloud Solution Architect with AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Advanced SQL server and AWS knowledge.
  • Active/Current Public Trust clearance.

Compensation and Benefits

Target Salary Range: $146,000 - $234,000. Salary is determined by various factors, including experience, education, skills, competencies, geographic location, and business/contract considerations. Employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
