Reporting to the SVP of Design, Product, and Technology, the role oversees technical strategy, architecture, security, and CMS/backend infrastructure using TypeScript, Node.js, Payload CMS, Next.js, and Astro. Candidates need at least five years of engineering management experience, deep full-stack and cloud expertise, and proficiency with LLM-native development workflows. The role is fully remote within the United States with total estimated compensation around $215,000 (roughly $175,000 base plus a $40,000 bonus).

The Role

This is a pivotal technology leadership role, overseeing engineering, delivery, and operations. You will set technical standards, make critical decisions, foster team growth, manage workflows, and ensure technology delivers on business objectives.

As a leader, you will also be a hands-on contributor. Endpoints operates with a small team where everyone, including leadership, functions as an Individual Contributor (IC). You will actively engage with the codebase weekly, undertaking significant development work. This approach is fundamental to our building process and essential for credible leadership within a team of this size.

Reporting to the SVP, Design, Product, and Technology, you will collaborate daily to shape the technical strategy, including architecture direction, build-versus-buy decisions, and platform evolution. While the SVP holds final product and design direction, your technical insights will be crucial. We value proactive solutions, preferring "here's how we could do that" over "here's why we can't."

This position serves as the primary technology counterpart to editorial and commercial leadership. The scope extends beyond engineering to include delivery, technical program management, operational layers, business systems, and vendor management. The team under your guidance will expand to reflect these broad responsibilities.

This is a fully remote role based in the United States.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and expand the technology team across engineering, delivery, and operations. Fully own people management aspects, including hiring, performance, development, and difficult conversations, scaling through managers as the function grows.
  • Collaborate with the SVP to define technical strategy, encompassing architecture, build/buy/integrate decisions, and future platform direction. You will drive the technical thinking and subsequent delivery, informing the SVP's final decisions.
  • Translate product direction into tangible, shipped work. Manage the entire process from outcome definition, standards, and deadlines to working software in production — scoping, technical requirements, sequencing, and stakeholder commitments.
  • Oversee delivery across the technology function, managing cadence, dependencies, and visibility to keep the company informed of upcoming releases.
  • Ensure the quality of team deliverables. Set technical standards, review and, if necessary, overrule architectural decisions, and implement mechanisms to prevent production issues.
  • Ship code weekly. As a hands-on leader in a small team, you will contribute directly to critical development tasks, challenging problems, and directional spikes alongside your team.
  • Launch new products and enhance existing ones across news, subscriptions, identity, data, and events, including the decommissioning of legacy platforms.
  • Lead security initiatives across all systems, addressing exposure, access control, legacy system decommissioning, third-party risk, and incident response.
  • Own the content and data spine. Your team will build the backend infrastructure, including content modeling, CMS management, APIs, and MCP services, supporting all front-end surfaces and teams. Designers will own and ship the design system.
  • Manage the operational layer, covering environments, CI, previews, observability, and the production pipeline to ensure confident deployments.
  • Oversee internal systems and tooling, including CRM, events, email, and subscription integrations, and services enabling business teams to interact directly with data.
  • Direct contractors and vendors, ensuring their output meets internal quality standards.
  • Facilitate the rapid deployment of sound AI-assisted work from non-engineers, discerning when AI output is not suitable.
  • Partner with editorial and business leadership to deliver features at the rapid pace required by a newsroom.

Technical Requirements

We prioritize depth in our specific stack over a generic list.

Hands-on, every week:

  • TypeScript, Node.js, and modern tooling.
  • Payload CMS on PostgreSQL, or equivalent expertise in headless, code-first CMS platforms.
  • Content modeling and API design (GraphQL and REST).
  • Next.js and Astro with React islands.
  • Application security: demonstrable expertise in authentication, authorization, secrets management, dependency hygiene, and least privilege principles.
  • LLM-native workflow: integrating AI tools into core development processes and understanding their appropriate use cases.

Depth you've built before, even where you now direct it:

  • Identity and payments: SSO/OIDC (Logto), Stripe, entitlements, and paywall logic.
  • AWS Cloud Architecture: Lambda via OpenNext, S3, CloudFront, IAM, RDS, and containers on Kubernetes.
  • Security operations: attack surface and asset inventory, decommissioning, access lifecycle, credential rotation, and forensic-ready logging.
  • Incident response: containment, evidence collection, and clear reporting based on log data.
  • Privacy and compliance: GDPR, CCPA, consent and tracking mechanisms, and data retention policies.
  • Experience with PHP, MySQL, Python/FastAPI, Elasticsearch, and message brokers.

What We're Looking For

  • Proven Technical Leader: 5+ years leading technical teams, including direct management of engineers and managing through other managers. Experience in hiring, developing, and exiting personnel, setting team standards, and accountability for deliverables.
  • Active Builder: Consistent contribution as an Individual Contributor (IC), regularly writing and shipping production code.
  • Broad Leadership Scope: Experience owning delivery, operations, vendor relationships, and stakeholder commitments beyond just the codebase, with accountability for technology outcomes.
  • Strategic Problem Solver: Ability to translate high-level business intent into detailed technical requirements, cost assessments, and impact analyses.
  • Backend & Infrastructure Expertise: Deep understanding of backend and infrastructure, even if not used daily, to effectively oversee work.
  • Experience collaborating with designers who ship their own code.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct contractors and vendors, ensuring their output meets high standards.
  • Collaborative Partner: A thinking partner for the SVP, engaging in robust discussions on technical feasibility, impact, and alternative solutions, committing fully once decisions are made.
  • Effective Communicator: Comfortable articulating technical concepts to editorial and commercial leaders and translating business needs into technical requirements.
  • A background in media or publishing is a strong advantage.

Compensation

Total compensation opportunity: approximately $215,000, comprising a base salary of around $175,000 and an annual bonus of approximately $40,000.
