Position Details: The Opportunity:

As the Web Development Director for University Marketing and Communications, you will provide enterprise-level leadership for Washington State University’s web ecosystem. You will be responsible for setting strategic direction, establishing institutional standards, and ensuring the university’s digital presence supports and advances accessibility, brand integrity, enrollment, and system-wide priorities.

In this role, your responsibilities will include exercising significant independent judgment, leading cross-functional governance, managing teams directly and through counsel and guidance, and serving as the university’s authority on web strategy, architecture, and accessibility for centrally hosted web platforms. You will also translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders, enabling informed decision-making at all levels. As the Web Development Director, you should have a thorough understanding of the entire web development process, including design and Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

Additionally, you will manage Washington State University’s web structure and hierarchy, define and clearly articulate web standards to WSU’s web community, and oversee web accessibility strategy for all centrally hosted websites. This includes developing and implementing the web operations budget, and supervising the web team and manage the team’s priorities.

This position has university-wide impact and is accountable for the integrity, accessibility, and strategic direction of WSU’s centrally governed web platforms. Decisions made by this role impact regulation compliance, brand, risk exposure, and the digital experience across multiple campuses and constituencies.

Additional Information:

This is a full time (100% FTE), permanent position. This position is overtime exempt.

This position is eligible for remote work within the United States of America. Washington State University's hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm (Pacific Standard Time). This position offers flexibility in the assigned work schedule; however, the successful candidate must be available and engaged during the majority of WSU standard operating hours to ensure effective collaboration and support team and client needs.

Travel to the WSU Pullman Campus (Pullman, WA) is required based on business needs. Candidates should expect occasional travel during the first six months of employment for onboarding and training purposes.

Monthly Salary: $8,000 - $10,000 | Commensurate with experience and qualifications

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and six (6) years of progressively responsible relevant experience, which has included at least three (3) years of managerial experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year‐for‐year basis. A Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience.
  • At least 5 years of professional web development experience.
  • Experience on the WordPress platform.
  • Experience with modern development workflows and software including, for example, Git and Vagrant. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with usability, accessibility and demonstrated knowledge of applicable laws, policies, standards, and best practices, including WCAG 2.2. and Section 508.
  • Proficient coding with CSS, PHP, and/or JavaScript.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working as part of a WordPress development team.
  • Experience contributing to and participating in the WordPress community.
  • Experience contributing to WordPress core.
  • Proven ability to write and review development documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to train clients to use their WordPress websites.
  • Experience working with NGINX web servers.
