The Tier 3/Network Systems Engineer is a vital member of the Tier 3 Systems Engineering team within the Managed Services department, reporting to the Director of Managed Services. This role focuses on system management and monitoring to consistently meet and exceed DataBank's SLA requirements, while upholding industry best practices in a multi-data center environment. The Systems Engineer will be instrumental in resolving Networking, Windows, Linux, Cloud, and Application issues, and will contribute to the documentation and training of the Support team.

The ideal candidate is a quick learner adept at solving complex technical problems across various technologies. This role requires excellent communication skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, growing environment. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in supporting and maintaining enterprise systems. This individual will follow senior management direction while proactively identifying opportunities to improve and stabilize the environment and implement process efficiencies.

Responsibilities

  • Manage routing & switching, firewall, load balancing, IDS/IPS, and DDoS solutions.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve problems related to virtual platforms and virtual infrastructure, including vCenter and vCloud Director.
  • Perform maintenance activities within the VMware platform.
  • Manage and operate Microsoft Windows-based server systems and associated technologies, including server clustering, DHCP, DNS, WINS, and DFS.
  • Troubleshoot network issues related to routing, firewalls, and load balancers.
  • Contribute to the creation and maintenance of team standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Configure and manage Microsoft Active Directory, including implementations and interoperability with disparate directory structures and security methods in an enterprise business environment.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to web services, specifically IIS, Apache, NGINX, and ColdFusion.
  • Troubleshoot database issues, such as MySQL and MSSQL.
  • Provide technical assistance to DataBank customers for the support and management of Windows and Linux Servers.
  • Implement proactive monitoring for all enterprise production systems, covering performance, failed hardware, alert conditions, and other issues affecting business operations.
  • Identify and implement efficiencies in daily processes and procedures.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and provide after-hours availability.
  • Assist in troubleshooting backup and restore issues utilizing Veeam, Commvault, Zerto, and Avamar.
  • Perform and document the decommissioning of physical and virtual servers and firewalls.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience required in the Information Technology (IT) field.
  • Experience with networking protocols: OSPF, BGP, EVPN/VXLAN, STP, MPLS, DMVPN, VPN, IPSEC, DNS, DHCP, NTP.
  • Experience managing large-scale Layer 2/3 network topologies.
  • Proficiency with network operating systems and hardware: JunOS (MX, QFX, EX) and Cisco IOS/NX-OS (Nexus 4k/7k, FEX, 6500, 7600).
  • Experience with network security technologies: Firewalls, Load Balancers, DDoS mitigation, IPSec, and IDS/IPS.
  • Hands-on experience with Cisco ASA (5515-5585 with SSPx), ASAv (5, 10, 30, 50), and Palo Alto (800/3000/5000 series) firewalls.
  • Experience with F5 server load balancing, including LTM and DNS.
  • Experience working with Windows and/or Linux platforms; ability to troubleshoot network connectivity issues at both application and Server OS levels.
  • Working knowledge and experience with virtual infrastructure technologies, specifically VMware.
  • Experience managing and configuring Active Directory, including replication services, group policies, and folder redirection.
  • Scripting experience with Python, PHP, or PowerShell is recommended.
  • Experience with web applications (IIS, Apache, PHP, NGINX, etc.).
  • Fundamental knowledge of backup and patching procedures.
  • Fundamental knowledge of system monitoring.
  • Experience with monitoring platforms such as Sciencelogic, Zabbix (a plus), Libre, or NAGIOS.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Superior customer service skills.
  • Project management oriented with the ability to lead project planning through implementation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, comfortable preparing procedural documentation and guidelines.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to record, organize, and communicate information effectively.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules when required.
