We are seeking a Staff Engineering Manager to lead day-to-day operational management within the ELS engineering department. This role involves direct people management for 6-8 team leads and engineering managers, focusing on execution, delivery health, and team effectiveness. You will collaborate closely with the Department Director, who oversees strategy, product development, and external initiatives.

As the primary people-leadership layer for ELS engineering, you will be responsible for hiring, performance management, professional development, and retention of leads and managers. You will ensure consistent processes, clear priorities, and alignment with departmental goals set by the Director. We expect proficiency in leveraging AI tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor) for efficient planning, reporting, analysis, and communication, enabling you to keep stakeholders informed without adding overhead.

Key Responsibilities:

People Management

  • Manage team leads and engineering managers, including 1:1s, career development, performance reviews, and succession planning.
  • Own hiring for lead/manager roles, support hiring plans and interview processes, and ensure effective onboarding for new leads and managers.
  • Identify and address engagement and retention risks, promoting well-being and a sustainable pace across teams.
  • Propose and implement organizational design, reporting structures, spans of control, and role clarity in partnership with the Director.
  • Utilize AI as a core management tool for streamlining 1:1 preparation, performance notes, status summaries, and organizational updates, modeling effective adoption for leads and managers.

Day-to-Day Operations

  • Own department-level Jira configuration, boards, and workflows; establish and maintain visibility of progress in AI-assisted engineering environments to provide stakeholders with clear, up-to-date delivery views.
  • Oversee delivery across teams, focusing on sprint health, roadmap execution, and blocker removal; use Jira and metrics for early risk detection; escalate strategic or cross-departmental issues to the Director.
  • Own and evolve department-level Agile/Scrum practices, Jira usage, and cross-team workflows, ensuring consistency and continuous improvement.
  • Allocate people and capacity across teams in alignment with priorities, balancing short-term delivery with technical debt and improvement initiatives.
  • Facilitate collaboration between ELS teams and other departments (e.g., support, product, other engineering organizations).

Quality and Standards

  • Maintain and elevate technical quality, AI adoption, and management practices among leads and managers.
  • Define and track department-level metrics (throughput, quality, retention, hiring), reporting to the Director and stakeholders as needed.
  • Own operational and people escalations, involving the Director for strategic, product, or customer-facing decisions.

Partnership with the Director

  • Translate department strategy and product priorities into clear goals, milestones, and team-level objectives.
  • Handle routine operational and people-management details, escalating only strategic, product, or customer-critical items to the Director.
  • Provide structured input to the Director on team health, risks, and opportunities to inform strategy and roadmap.

Requirements

To excel in this role, candidates should possess:

  • English Language Proficiency: Upper-intermediate or better (written and spoken).
  • Management of Managers: 3+ years of experience managing team leads and/or engineering managers in a remote-first environment.
  • Engineering Background: Solid technical foundation (e.g., Linux, packaging, scripting, or application security) to effectively coach leads and managers and understand delivery tradeoffs.
  • Delivery and Process: Strong experience with Agile/Scrum, roadmap execution, and cross-team delivery; leadership experience with Jira (boards, workflows, reporting) and establishing progress visibility at team or department scale.
  • People Leadership: Proven ability to hire, develop, and retain technical leads and managers; experience with performance management, career frameworks, and difficult conversations.
  • Operational Ownership: Experience owning day-to-day operations (capacity, prioritization, process) while a senior leader focuses on strategy and external initiatives.
  • Communication: Clear, structured communication with leads, managers, the Director, and stakeholders; ability to represent the department internally.
  • AI-Augmented Management: Comfort using AI tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor) for management tasks like status updates, reporting, analysis, and written communication, enabling efficient operations and visible progress without manual overhead.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in security or lifecycle support domains (e.g., CVE/patching, EOL support, TuxCare/ELS-style products).
  • Experience driving AI adoption or engineering excellence initiatives across multiple teams; experience using AI for management tasks (reporting, status, analysis, 1:1 prep).
  • Familiarity with CloudLinux or ELS products and customers.

Benefits

What we offer:
