We are seeking an experienced Senior WordPress Developer to spearhead the redesign and development of a large-scale, public-facing website for a major transit organization. This role requires blending advanced technical skills with creative problem-solving to deliver a modern, highly accessible, and user-friendly digital experience.
You will be responsible for building a fast, mobile-responsive, and ADA-compliant WordPress website, integrating essential APIs, real-time data feeds, and user-focused design elements. This position is ideal for a developer proficient in both front-end and back-end development who thrives in a collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the full WordPress website development lifecycle: planning, design, coding, testing, and deployment.
- Redesign and rebuild the organization’s website on WordPress utilizing an open-source CMS framework.
- Develop modern, clean, and responsive layouts prioritizing strong UX and accessibility standards.
- Implement multilingual support and integrate translation tools (e.g., Google Translate).
- Build custom features and integrations, including:
- Real-time data integration (e.g., Swiftly API or similar).
- Trip planner functionality using Google Maps or GTFS data.
- Careers portal integration with applicant tracking systems (e.g., Paylocity).
- Payment gateways and digital ticketing solutions (e.g., Token Transit/QR).
- Ensure full compliance with WCAG 2.1 AA and ADA accessibility standards.
- Optimize website performance, security hardening, and scalability.
- Create user-friendly navigation and structure for quick information access (1–2 clicks to key information).
- Maintain consistent branding and visual design aligned with the organization’s identity.
- Implement SEO best practices and analytics tracking.
- Provide comprehensive documentation and user guides for non-technical content management staff.
- Offer post-launch support and participate in training sessions for internal teams.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Web Development, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of experience in WordPress development (custom themes, plugins, and code).
- Strong proficiency with PHP, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and MySQL.
- Proven experience building accessible, responsive, and multilingual websites.
- Familiarity with WCAG 2.1 AA, ADA, and Section 508 compliance requirements.
- Experience integrating APIs, maps, real-time data, and third-party systems.
- Strong understanding of UX/UI principles and web performance optimization.
- Knowledge of security hardening techniques for WordPress websites.
- Experience with version control (Git) and cloud hosting environments.
- Excellent attention to detail and demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.

- Experience working with public sector or transportation agencies.
- Familiarity with GIS data and transit-related tools.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $88,454.91 - $106,526.34 per year
