We are seeking a talented Senior Linux Systems Administrator to manage the critical servers responsible for processing data originating from the global network of buoys overseen by the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC).
Key Responsibilities:
- Participate in a 24x7x365 on-call rotation to support primary IT mission essential data processing, applications, and functions, ensuring the continuity of operations for the NDBC information system.
- Support IT architecture improvements necessary for continuous operations and reliable data flow.
- Actively support annual NDBC IT Assessment and Authorization (A&A) audits by performing security patching and security-minded configuration updates.
- Address requirements resulting from Plan of Action & Milestones (POAM) to help NDBC maintain its Authority to Operate (ATO).
- Maintain all Linux-based servers and clients, both on-premises and within the AWS cloud environment.
- Follow system administration best practices, patching and configuring systems in compliance with NOAA security requirements.
- Upgrade operating systems proactively before end-of-support dates.
- Support software development efforts and deploy application updates for both Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) and internal applications.
- Plan and implement cost-effective migration strategies for moving local systems to a cloud environment where feasible.
- Ensure reliable system and data backups, manage/maintain server certificates, and maintain Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscriptions.
- Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required.
- Communicate upcoming maintenance efforts and anticipated impacts clearly to stakeholders.
- Implement automation strategies to streamline routine administration tasks.
- Maintain and monitor data center environmental equipment.
Required Qualifications & Experience:
- 8+ years of experience preferred in the installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of IT system hardware, software, and related infrastructure.
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge and experience supporting Red Hat Linux, Apache, Tomcat, drivers, applications, vulnerabilities, security requirements, security postures, and quarterly STIG updates.
- Experience installing and maintaining system hardware, operating systems, software systems, network systems, and security systems.
- Experience applying OS patches and upgrades regularly, and configuring, adding, and removing services as necessary.
- Understanding of programming languages such as Java, Python, PHP, and Perl.
- Ability to work autonomously, take initiative, identify areas for improvement, and propose solutions.
- Effective communication skills with coworkers and stakeholders.
- Must successfully complete a NOAA (Stennis Space Center)/NASA background investigation for site/system access.
- This position supports a long-term Federal Government contract and REQUIRES US Citizenship OR a Greencard for eligibility.
Preferred Skills:
- Knowledge of AWS solutions and experience migrating Linux systems.
- Highly preferred: Experience implementing automation and scripting languages to streamline recurring system administration tasks.
- Desirable: Experience with AWS Lambda, containers, and EC2 instances.
