The Innovation Team

The Innovation Team is a newly established unit, reporting to the Senior Software Manager and led by the CTO (both based in Germany). As a key member of this small, highly qualified team, you will be the driving force behind the next generation of Matomo innovations.

You will engage in both backend (PHP) and frontend (JavaScript) development, generating new ideas, prototyping solutions, and sustainably integrating them into our core product. This includes everything from AI-supported insights and advanced analytics features to new approaches that enhance user experience and customer value4turning concepts into reality.

Beyond developing analytical features, you will leverage AI-based tools to accelerate code development, allowing more time for creative problem-solving.

Key Responsibilities:

• Full-Stack Innovation: Design, prototype, and develop new features across the backend (PHP) and frontend (JS). Potential use of Python or Node.js.
• Rapid Prototyping & Validation: Quickly test new product ideas, including AI/Insights, against real-world use cases.
• End-to-End Ownership: Manage ideas from the initial concept phase through to full implementation.
• Product-Centric Engineering: Focus beyond code on usability, scalability, security, and delivering sustainable value.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Matomo's founders and Senior Engineers using tools like Slack, Jira, and Confluence.
• Independent Execution: Work efficiently and autonomously within a small, agile team structure.
• Blocker Resolution: Proactively identify and resolve obstacles; escalate issues as needed to maintain progress.
• Broad Innovation Scope: Explore new opportunities in data analysis, visualization, integrations, and user experience, extending beyond AI.
• Knowledge Sharing: Document and disseminate concepts, prototypes, and findings to foster company-wide innovation.
• Continuous Improvement: Stay current with the latest technologies, frameworks, and trends.

Required Skills & Experience:

• Solid experience in backend development (PHP or Python), frontend development (JavaScript), and database environments.
• Proven track record of implementing features from initial idea through to production deployment.
• Ability to work independently and take ownership within a small, dynamic team.
• Product-Oriented Mindset: Ability to translate user needs and strategic goals into practical, actionable solutions.
• Skill in balancing development speed with code quality, ensuring efficiency without over-engineering.
• Strong problem-solving capabilities and a pragmatic approach to adopting new technologies.
• Understanding of security best practices and vulnerability prevention.
• Experience writing automated tests, performing code reviews, and creating documentation.
• Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
• Comfort working in a 100% remote, global, and agile environment.

Desirable Qualifications:

• Experience with analytics, reporting, data visualization, or AI/ML integrations.
• Prior contribution to or work with open-source projects.
• Knowledge of UX principles and data-driven product design.
• Experience in innovation, R&D, or product prototyping.
• German language skills.
