ABOUT NATIONAL TESTING NETWORK (NTN)
NTN is an exciting and growing privately held company, committed to supporting public safety organizations by providing products and services that help them hire the highest quality candidates. At NTN, we believe public safety is vital to a thriving community and we support our clients with purpose and compassion. If you want to make a true difference, NTN is a good place to work.
ABOUT THE ROLE
NTN is looking for a Senior Full-Stack Developer to become the primary technical owner of our AWS Amplify Gen2 application platform — the systems that power our candidate- and client-facing assessment portals. This is a hands-on engineering role: you'll write production code, own deployments, review pull requests, and resolve incidents independently, working across a modern serverless AWS stack (~400 Lambda functions, Cognito, AppSync GraphQL, Aurora MySQL).
You'll also serve as the senior technical resource for a junior developer on the team and collaborate closely with teammates who own our database/legacy application layer and our AWS infrastructure. Architectural direction comes from IT leadership; this role is where that direction gets built and shipped.
WHAT YOU'LL OWN
- Full ownership of our Amplify Gen2 candidate and client portals — React/TypeScript frontend, AppSync GraphQL API, Lambda functions (Node.js/TypeScript), Cognito user pools, and the Aurora MySQL cluster behind them
- Primary technical contributor to our Python-based serverless API layer (Lambda/API Gateway/EventBridge), including Python development on the new Client Portal
- Senior-level escalation support for a legacy CFML/Lucee application fleet running on Elastic Beanstalk (you don't need CFML experience going in — reading proficiency is learnable in a few weeks for an experienced developer)
- Maintaining the engineering practices that keep the platform healthy: PR review, a monthly deploy and patching cadence, IAM least-privilege, and up-to-date system documentation
- Mentoring a junior developer and helping them grow into ownership of specific subsystems
WHAT YOU'LL DO IN YOUR FIRST 90 DAYS
- Take ownership of the Amplify Gen2 platform from the current contract team, using the documented architecture, runbooks, monthly Lambda patch cadence, and PR review process already in place
- Join our new Client Portal rebuild early in its build phase and act as the senior technical voice on architecture (Amplify Gen2 / React / Python), standards, and code review as distributed development partners ramp up
- Deliver incremental product and pricing enhancements to the candidate-facing experience
- Provide senior review for our 2027 plan to reduce risk in our legacy CFML applications, including a Lucee upgrade and selective modernization
- Establish a regular code review and pairing cadence with the team's junior developer
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years of professional full-stack web application development in a production environment
- Deep expertise in Python for back-end development, with proven experience building serverless applications
- Extensive hands-on experience with AWS Lambda (Python and Node.js/TypeScript), including deployment, monitoring, and optimization
- Strong proficiency with AWS API Gateway (REST and HTTP APIs), including setup, configuration, security, and integration with Lambda functions
- 3+ years of hands-on AWS experience, including Cognito and Aurora
- Production-level React and TypeScript proficiency, including component design, state management, and performance optimization — able to demonstrate with code samples or a portfolio
- Experience with AppSync GraphQL, including schema design and resolver authoring
- Solid experience with MySQL database design, development, and optimization (query tuning, schema design, indexing)
- Demonstrated experience owning a production system end-to-end, not just contributing to one
- Experience applying code quality best practices, including unit and integration testing, code reviews, and continuous refactoring
- Experience effectively leveraging AI in your day-to-day work
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Comfortable operating in a small engineering team where senior judgment and independent execution are required
EDUCATION
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent combination of education and experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- AWS CDK (TypeScript) experience, particularly permission scoping and Amplify Gen2's backend model
- Experience taking over and extending an existing codebase without the original authors available
- Experience with DynamoDB
- Familiarity with containerization (Docker)
- Experience with AWS Elastic Beanstalk
- CFML/Lucee (or ColdFusion/PHP) reading proficiency — helpful, not required
- AWS Certified Developer - Associate or AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate
- Experience in a public safety, government, education, or other regulated-data environment
- Greenfield Amplify Gen2 (or comparable serverless) experience, ideally alongside work on an existing production system
- Experience leading or reviewing work from distributed or offshore development teams
- Experience mentoring junior developers
WHY JOIN US?
- Competitive salary and benefits
- Work remotely
- Opportunity to work on cutting-edge serverless technologies
- Significant project ownership
