
Manager of Web Development (Remote)
VP DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION & TECHNOLOGY
The Manager of Web Development provides strategic leadership for Old Dominion University’s unified web development function. This remote role oversees the design, development, and implementation of enterprise-level web solutions across ODU.edu, EVMS.edu, ODUGlobal, and additional university web properties.
Key responsibilities include serving as the first line of support for the university’s web systems, coordinating vendor relationships, and establishing development priorities in collaboration with the Executive Director of Web Innovation & Strategy. This leader ensures alignment with institutional goals, drives AI and emerging technology initiatives, and represents ODU as a leader in higher education web innovation.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Master's degree in Computer Science, MIS, or related field of study required.
- Or a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, or related field of study with related work experience equivalent to a master's degree in the preceding fields.
Required Skills & Experience
- Demonstrated record of innovation in digital and web technology.
- Proven leadership in directing large-scale enterprise web development teams.
- Expertise in strategic planning and decision-making for complex, multi-site web ecosystems.
- Expertise in programming languages and related frameworks, including XML, JSON, Java, PHP, JavaScript, CSS, HTML5, and SQL.
- Demonstrated success in vendor and contract management.
- Considerable knowledge of Drupal and Content Management System (CMS) administration at scale.
- Strong background in systems integration, APIs, and enterprise architecture.
- Exceptional communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence across all university levels.
- Ability to identify and resolve technical blockers quickly, ensuring smooth development progress.
- Skilled in establishing and enforcing coding standards, code reviews, and best practices to maintain high-quality, scalable, and maintainable codebases.
- Adept at mentoring and coaching team members, fostering continuous learning, and encouraging innovative problem-solving.
- Strong focus on optimizing workflows, introducing tools, and implementing processes that increase team productivity and reduce delivery risks.
- Considerable experience in enterprise-level web development, project leadership, and team supervision.
- Considerable experience in designing and implementing CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and deployment processes that improve release speed and reliability.
Additional Considerations
- Working experience leading in higher education environments.
- Familiarity with accessibility standards, SEO, analytics, and digital governance models.
- Strong record of implementing emerging technologies including AI-driven web solutions.
