Job Summary

Join our team as a Database Administrator, playing a critical role in maintaining the health and performance of our Revenue Compliance platforms. These platforms manage tax, business license, and property tax data for government agencies, serving as the system of record for revenue collection. This hands-on position involves both daily database operations and significant contributions to our migration to Amazon Aurora.

As a Database Administrator, you will be responsible for the build-and-run aspects of our database infrastructure. Your work will include assessing, migrating schema and data, and rehearsing cutovers for the Amazon Aurora migration. Additionally, you will manage essential operational tasks such as backup and recovery, performance tuning, capacity planning, and security. This role offers direct ownership of platform stability, working within a specialized team alongside software engineering, site reliability, and data engineering professionals.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Administer production and non-production MySQL and MariaDB environments, covering backup, restore, replication, patching, upgrades, capacity planning, and monitoring.
• Contribute actively to the Amazon Aurora migration, including assessment, schema and data migration, replication, cutover planning, validation, and rollback procedures; help define operating practices for the new environment.
• Profile slow queries, analyze execution plans, and develop effective indexing strategies; collaborate with application engineers to resolve performance issues at their root.
• Maintain and regularly test robust backup and recovery procedures, ensuring recovery point and recovery time objectives are consistently met.
• Manage access controls, credentials, encryption (at rest and in transit), and audit compliance for systems handling sensitive government and taxpayer data.
• Automate manual database operations through scripting, creating repeatable and version-controlled processes.
• Review schema changes and migrations pre-release; provide expert advice to engineering teams on data modeling, query design, and the database implications of new features.
• Participate in an on-call rotation for database incidents; lead root cause analysis and implement durable corrective actions.
• Exercise independent judgment in diagnosing and resolving production database issues, determining remediation, and escalating based on severity and customer impact.
• Establish and document operational standards for the database estate, evaluating tooling and process improvements for reliability and reduced manual effort.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional experience.
• 3-6 years of hands-on database administration experience in production environments.
• Proven experience administering managed cloud database services like AWS RDS, Azure SQL, or similar platforms.
• Demonstrated practical experience executing backup, disaster recovery, and high-availability procedures.
• Hands-on experience with Amazon Aurora (MySQL-compatible or PostgreSQL-compatible), including cluster configuration, read replicas, and performance characteristics.
• Participation in a completed database migration from on-premises or self-managed infrastructure to a managed cloud service, including cutover planning and rollback.
• Experience with AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) or comparable replication and migration tools.
• Microsoft SQL Server administration experience, supporting reporting and audit-compliance systems on SQL Server and Azure.
• Experience supporting PHP-based application stacks or collaborating closely with PHP engineers.
• Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation, and CI/CD practices.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Strong working knowledge of MySQL or MariaDB, including configuration, replication, backup, recovery, and version upgrades.
• Demonstrated ability in query and index tuning, including reading execution plans and independent performance diagnosis.
• Solid SQL skills and a practical understanding of relational data modeling.
• Scripting proficiency for automation using Python, Bash, or similar languages.
• Working knowledge of backup, disaster recovery, and high-availability concepts and architectures.
• Clear written communication for documenting procedures and incident findings for technical audiences.
• Sound judgment for escalation during production incidents.
• Ability to manage competing operational and project priorities independently.
• Effective collaboration skills with software engineering, site reliability, and data engineering teams in a remote environment.
• Working knowledge of AWS cost and capacity management for database workloads.
• Familiarity with security and audit requirements for government or regulated data.

Work Environment

This role operates in an office setting with a moderate noise level. The employee will work at an individual workstation, utilizing a telephone and computer.
