Data Scientist (Core & Business Products)

We are seeking Data Scientists to join Hyperspace Ventures and work on our core and business products, helping to shape the future of our offerings. This role involves working with diverse data sets and cutting-edge technology, providing the opportunity to regularly see your insights transformed into tangible products.

The ideal candidate possesses a background in a quantitative or technical field, experience handling large data sets, and a history of data-driven decision making. You must be results-focused, a self-starter, and demonstrate success in using analytics to drive product understanding, growth, and success.

Qualifications for this Role

  • 2+ years experience performing quantitative analysis.
  • BA/BS in Computer Science, Math, Physics, Engineering, Statistics, or another technical field.
  • Experience in SQL or other programming languages.
  • Development experience in any scripting language (e.g., PHP, Python, Perl).
  • Experience communicating analysis results to product and leadership teams to influence product strategy.
  • Knowledge of statistics (e.g., hypothesis testing, regressions).
  • Experience manipulating data sets through statistical software (e.g., R, SAS) or other methods.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degrees.
  • Experience with distributed computing (Hive/Hadoop).

Responsibilities

  • Apply expertise in quantitative analysis, data mining, and data presentation to understand how users interact with both consumer and business products.
  • Partner with Product and Engineering teams to solve complex problems and identify trends and opportunities.
  • Inform, influence, support, and execute product decisions and product launches.

Data Scientist Analytics Focus Areas

The Data Scientist Analytics role encompasses work across the following four areas:

Product Operations

  • Forecasting and setting product team goals.
  • Designing and evaluating experiments.
  • Monitoring key product metrics, understanding root causes of changes in metrics.
  • Building and analyzing dashboards and reports.
  • Building key data sets to empower operational and exploratory analysis.
  • Evaluating and defining metrics.

Exploratory Analysis

  • Proposing features to build in the next roadmap cycle.
  • Understanding ecosystems, user behaviors, and long-term trends.
  • Identifying new levers to help move key metrics.
  • Building models of user behaviors for analysis or to power production systems.

Product Leadership

  • Influencing product teams through presentation of data-based recommendations.
  • Communicating the state of business, experiment results, etc., to product teams.
  • Spreading best practices to analytics and product teams.

Data Infrastructure

  • Working primarily in Hadoop and Hive, and sometimes MySQL, Oracle, and Vertica.
  • Automating analyses and authoring pipelines via SQL and Python-based ETL framework.
