The Federal Civilian business unit serves a diverse range of federal, commercial, and nonprofit clients, including NASA, the General Services Administration, Office of Personnel Management, the Library of Congress, Health & Human Services, and the FDIC. We partner with these agencies to develop new capabilities, deliver innovative products, leverage data for informed decision-making, modernize legacy systems, and establish the digital service infrastructure necessary to scale their mission impact.
Primary Responsibilities
The Staff Software Engineer Back End acts as an emerging subject matter expert and an individual contributor, demonstrating high levels of trust, autonomy, and empowerment. With minimal leadership oversight, you will lead and monitor project scope, schedule, and delivery requirements, potentially supporting adjacent programs within the business unit. This role requires strong influential skills to represent software engineering in planning sessions, advocate for optimal technical solutions, and communicate trade-offs. You will serve as the primary lead, proactively communicating with stakeholders and driving improvements in software engineering processes and practices. Key expectations for a Staff Software Engineer - Back End include:
- Planning and executing roadmaps for new projects without explicit guidance from technical supervisors.
- Actively participating in conversations and planning sessions with partners and key stakeholders.
- Periodically traveling to work with and present to clients, partners, and stakeholders.
- Elaborating on and evolving complex and ambiguous products to identify constraints and new opportunities.
- Reducing ambiguity in existing systems through documentation, refactoring, and automated testing.
- Effectively communicating about existing systems, design decisions, past performance, and project history for bid-writing, tech demos, and client-facing communications.
- Participating in technical depth interviews with new candidates.
- Presenting on technical topics effectively, articulating implementation complexity and costs to inform business decisions.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and 9+ years of engineering experience, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Expert-level capabilities in at least one major technology stack, with the ability to independently lead teams and ensure successful delivery.
- Experience designing and working with API and backend systems at scale.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with PHP, Node.js, or Golang.

In compliance with various state and city equal pay transparency laws, Ad Hoc job descriptions include the starting salary range we reasonably expect to pay candidates who join our team with minimal training requirements for the outlined responsibilities. Actual compensation is influenced by factors such as skill set, experience level, and responsibility. The starting pay range for this role is $145,000-$150,000.
