Software Engineer (Mid-Level)

Reports To - Engineering Manager

Summary

AxisCare is hiring a full-time, fully remote Mid-Level Software Engineer to join a team actively rethinking software development processes.

Are you a skilled developer who anticipates future trends? The landscape for engineers focused solely on translating specifications into code is evolving rapidly with AI. This role is designed for those who want to lead this shift by specializing in system architecture, software design, and deep problem understanding. This is a senior-track position, offering growth opportunities with mentorship from senior and staff engineers.

We are focused on building the "factory" for great software, integrating human expertise where it matters most. We seek engineers energized by this paradigm shift who can contribute to its practical implementation. (Read more about how we think AI is changing product development.)

You will join an autonomous project team developing our market-leading home care SaaS platform. This platform is built on a PHP web stack with a React/TypeScript frontend. You will deliver impactful features for home care agencies that rely on our software for their daily operations.

There is an enduring need for professionals who deeply understand customer problems, solve them with high-quality software, and ensure reliable production operation. This is the core work we are hiring for.

Our team consists of humble, talented, and conscientious builders who collaborate effectively to deliver exceptional results.

What This Role Actually Looks Like

You will develop well-scoped features under the guidance and mentorship of experienced senior and staff engineers. The expectations for a mid-level engineer in 2026 differ significantly from previous years. Specifically, we expect you to:

  • Use AI as a core development tool for prototyping, exploration, refactoring, test writing, and shipping. We are interested in your developed workflows, effective AI agent applications, and identified limitations.
  • Push AI tools to their limits and report findings. We are actively exploring new frontiers. An engineer who attempts ambitious AI applications, encounters challenges, and documents their learnings is highly valued.
  • Focus on problem-solving, not just coding. As code generation becomes less resource-intensive, understanding what to build and its importance to home care agencies is paramount. Successful engineers here are curious about customers and operations, beyond just ticket resolution.
  • Ship quality software that is easily maintainable. High-quality software provides immediate value and facilitates future changes. Rapid development with AI requires robust, adaptable code.
  • Manage time effectively to ensure on-time delivery. Prioritize meaningful progress and avoid getting sidetracked by minor details, especially when AI can lead to rabbit holes.
  • Share learned insights. Software development is a collaborative effort, and team improvement relies on sharing successes and lessons.
  • Write clearly and effectively. Strong writing is essential for remote work, reflects clear thinking, and maximizes AI's impact.

What We're Looking For

  • At least 2 years of professional experience building full-stack web applications with PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Experience developing React applications in TypeScript.
  • Working knowledge of object-oriented programming and relational databases (e.g., MySQL).
  • Comfort with Git and collaborative development workflows.
  • Demonstrated, substantive use of AI coding tools in real projects. We seek concrete examples of AI-assisted development, workflow evolution, and insights into AI's strengths and weaknesses beyond basic autocomplete.
  • A team-oriented mindset in software development, prioritizing collective success over individual achievement.
  • A humble, continuous-learner attitude. The technology landscape is constantly shifting, and successful candidates are eager to learn and adapt.
  • Based in the US (Eastern, Central, or Mountain time zones) and authorized to work in the US or Canada.

What We'd Be Excited to Find

  • A habit of pushing AI tools beyond conventional use and offering thoughtful insights from those experiences (e.g., agent-driven development, complex refactors, prototyping for learning).
  • Experience building for cloud-native environments.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA-compliant software.
  • Experience designing RESTful APIs and integrating third-party APIs.
  • Evidence of your software development philosophy, such as a blog, substantive GitHub projects, recorded talks, or discussions on challenging product development decisions.

Working Conditions

  • Manual dexterity required for desktop computer and peripheral use.

Compensation and Equipment

  • Salary (TBD based on job experience and skill level).
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance fully covered for the employee.
  • Company-provided laptop and necessary computer equipment.

How to Apply

Submit a brief resume and either a written or video cover letter.

Your cover letter is reviewed first and is crucial for your application. Video submissions receive priority consideration.

Prompt: Describe a recent project where AI played a significant role in its development. Detail your approach, where the tools excelled, where they fell short, and what you learned about your role as an engineer. Explain why this team, at this moment, aligns with your career aspirations.

Written: Maximum 600 words. Focus on clarity of thought and strong communication. AI assistance is acceptable, but ensure quality.

Video: 1–2 minutes, linked in the "Website, Blog, or Portfolio" section of your application. Production quality is less important than demonstrating your thought process and communication skills.

We strongly encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply. Our team's diverse perspectives enhance our products and enrich our work. We are committed to supporting you in delivering work you are proud of.

Candidates only. No recruiters, please.
