Job Overview

We are seeking a full-ownership software engineer to build a new TypeScript system that will replace our existing PHP system. This role also involves maintaining the current PHP system throughout the transition. This is a full-lifecycle role where you will take problems from requirements to production and maintain ownership. You will work across both technology stacks, make critical technical decisions, and be accountable for your deliverables.

Effective use of AI coding tools is a core expectation for this role, to be integrated into your daily workflow. Your velocity, code quality, and problem-solving abilities should demonstrate proficient AI tool utilization. We prioritize judgment: understanding your shipped code, making sound decisions, and knowing when to challenge AI outputs.

This description applies to all experience levels (L1–L4). Interview depth and expectations will be tailored to your specific level.

What You'll Own

  • Features from requirements to production: breaking them down, building, shipping, and monitoring them.
  • Technical decisions within your scope, supported by clear trade-off reasoning.
  • The quality of your code and the areas you impact.
  • Responding to incidents and developer escalations within your domain.
  • Building the new TypeScript system designed to replace the legacy PHP platform.
  • Maintaining and supporting the existing PHP system during the transition period.

What Your Work Will Entail

Feature Development

  • Take feature requests, break them into tasks, estimate, and deliver independently.
  • Build the new TypeScript-based system intended to replace our existing PHP platform.
  • Maintain and support the current PHP system in parallel until the new system is fully migrated.
  • Write clean, tested, production-ready code that adheres to team standards.
  • Make technical decisions for features and clearly explain trade-offs.
  • Monitor your features in production, including logs, metrics, and alerts.
  • Improve the codebase (refactor, document, reduce technical debt).

Production Ownership & Incident Response

  • Respond to developer escalations with urgency: investigate issues, communicate findings, and contribute to resolutions.
  • Participate in incident response: at all levels, you are expected to engage, assist with investigations, and support resolution.
  • L4+: Drive incident response for your domain, coordinating investigations, delegating tasks, communicating status to stakeholders, and ensuring post-mortems occur.
  • Write runbooks and keep documentation current as you build.

Code Quality & Testing

  • Write unit and integration tests as an integral part of feature development, not as an afterthought.
  • Actively participate in code reviews: provide thoughtful feedback and act on feedback received.
  • Identify edge cases and risks during the planning phase, not after deployment.

AI-Augmented Development (Expected, Not Optional)

  • Utilize AI coding tools daily for code generation, debugging, test writing, exploring unfamiliar codebase sections, and accelerating code reviews.
  • Your output should demonstrate measurable speed improvements due to AI tool usage.
  • You must understand everything you ship; AI serves as an accelerator, not a substitute for judgment.
  • L3+: Assist teammates in developing effective AI workflows and contribute to team standards for AI tool usage.
  • L4+: Establish team standards for AI tool usage, evaluating what delivers real value and ensuring quality is not compromised for speed.

Collaboration

  • Work closely with Product, Design, QA, and other engineering teams.
  • Contribute meaningfully to sprint planning and technical discussions.
  • L3+: Mentor L1/L2 engineers through code reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing.

What You Bring To This Role

Technical Environment

Primary Stack: TypeScript/Node.js for the new system development, and PHP 7.4/8+ with Laravel for maintaining the existing system during transition.

Infrastructure: MariaDB, Redis, AWS (EC2, RDS, CloudWatch, SQS, S3), Docker, GitHub Actions CI/CD.

This role mandates active, hands-on TypeScript experience and prior professional experience with PHP. Hands-on experience integrating payment platforms such as Stripe and PayPal is also required.

Expectations by Level

  • L1: Works on well-scoped tickets with guidance. Focuses on learning the codebase and practices. Uses AI tools to accelerate learning and delivery.
  • L2: Independently owns features. Requires minimal guidance on implementation. Demonstrates noticeably faster output due to AI tool usage.
  • L3: Leads small projects. Mentors L1/L2 engineers. Proactively improves the codebase. Teaches effective AI workflows.
  • L4: Serves as a technical authority for a domain. Drives cross-team projects. Sets team AI standards. Drives incident response.

Success Metrics

Initially, you will ship your first feature to production, grasp the core architecture, and set up your local development environment. Subsequently, you will independently ship features end-to-end and contribute to code reviews. As you advance, you will contribute significantly to technical discussions and manage developer escalations within your area.

On-Call

Shared rotation (approximately 1 week per month after ramp-up). Critical incidents: 15-minute response. High-priority incidents: 1-hour response.
