About the Role: Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET)

Hostaway seeks a highly motivated Senior SDET to champion quality and drive market growth. You will play a critical role in ensuring our products are reliable, secure, and built for scale.

Your Mission:

  • Apply a deep understanding of modern testing methodologies.
  • Evaluate technical designs and identify quality gaps early in the development cycle.
  • Provide insightful feedback to strengthen the overall engineering approach.
  • Refine testing and release strategies using data and metrics to ensure robust testing frameworks and observability patterns are in place.
  • Enable continuous, confident releases by catching potential issues early.
  • Collaborate closely with product and engineering teams to make testing everyone's responsibility, acting as a catalyst for elevated testing practices.
  • Focus on enabling the team to deliver value through reliable, well-tested code, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability.
  • Ensure technical decisions align with broader business objectives to drive continuous innovation and outstanding customer outcomes.

Required Skills & Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in SaaS software development as an SDET.
  • Expert-level proficiency with UI-driven test frameworks (e.g., Playwright or Cypress).
  • Excellent JavaScript and/or TypeScript skills.
  • Strong experience with unit testing (using Jest or similar).
  • Proven experience building integration test frameworks.
  • Experience with non-functional testing tools and practices (e.g., performance, chaos, and accessibility testing).
  • Strong understanding of CI/CD tooling (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI).
  • Good understanding of relational databases (e.g., MySQL or PostgreSQL).
  • Familiarity with observability tools (e.g., DataDog or New Relic).
  • Experience with Agile methodologies and CI/CD practices.
  • Outstanding communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across product and engineering teams.

Nice to Have

  • Previous experience with PHP or willingness to dive into current PHP business logic.
  • Experience in coaching and mentoring other engineers on testing practices.
  • Experience building test tooling such as mock servers, OpenAPI-generated tests and clients, or test data management solutions.
  • Contributions to open-source testing tools or frameworks.
  • Knowledge of contract testing approaches (such as Pact).
  • Familiarity with security testing practices and tools.

An Average Day for a Senior SDET

  • Quick team stand-up, followed by initiating a Three Amigos session to define testing boundaries and dependencies for new work.
  • Pairing with developers to build tests at the right levels.
  • Joining a collaborative session with the quality community of practice to align on cross-team initiatives and demonstrate new test solutions.
  • Providing invaluable input on testability and dependencies for new product opportunities during discussions with the Product Manager and Tech Lead.
  • Focus time for adding test coverage, iterating frameworks/tooling, and performing code reviews.
