About the role
Hostaway is seeking a highly motivated Senior Backend Engineer to join our Core team. This team is responsible for critical integrations with key partners, including Online Travel Agencies. These integrations are vital for our customers' daily operations, ensuring seamless connectivity between their properties and major booking platforms. If you have experience with high-volume tools and complex API interactions, you will be an excellent fit.
What you'll do
- Design, build, and operate backend services using PHP and Go.
- Lead the extraction of services from our monolith, establishing clear boundaries, ownership, and migration strategies.
- Collaborate closely with the Product Manager to define technical direction and maximize the value of our backend services.
- Design and deliver APIs optimized for agentic interfaces, making our guest-facing domain consumable by AI agents and automated workflows.
- Enhance page speed and end-to-end performance, working with frontend peers to improve conversion rates.
- Contribute to high-level architectural decisions, enabling rapid progress without accumulating technical debt.
- Utilize AI to accelerate code delivery; a Claude Team Premium subscription is provided, and engineers are expected to leverage it effectively.
- Possess 6+ years of experience as a Backend Engineer, with a strong foundation in software engineering.
- Demonstrate strong proficiency in PHP and/or Golang, with a keen willingness to work with both.
- Proven experience in designing and operating high-traffic, customer-facing systems.
- Experience with decomposing monoliths or extracting services, applying a pragmatic approach to when and when not to do so.
- Solid experience in designing APIs (REST, GraphQL, or similar), focusing on clarity, versioning, and consumability (bonus for experience building APIs for AI agents or LLM-driven clients).
- Familiarity with transitioning to event-driven service-oriented architectures using Domain Driven Design (DDD) principles.
- Comfortable using AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, etc.) in daily workflows to achieve significant productivity gains.
- Experience working in a Cloud environment (AWS is a plus).
- Experience with message queues (e.g., AWS SQS) is a plus.
