What You’ll Do: Backend Systems & Architecture
As a Senior Backend Engineer at Blockworks, you will design, build, and maintain the systems that power our products end-to-end. You will own the backend layer—from high-performance APIs to database architecture—that makes everything possible. You will help define requirements, scope projects, and make architectural decisions that shape our technical foundation, directly impacting our research platform (blockworksresearch.com) and media site (blockworks.co; 1M+ monthly active users).
Key responsibilities include:
- Architect, build, and ship backend systems that can scale to millions of requests/day.
- Design, implement, and optimize APIs that power our research and media products.
- Build pipelines to parse and model blockchain transactions and financial data.
- Own database design, optimization, and reliability (MySQL/Postgres).
- Implement caching and performance strategies with Redis or similar tools.
- Lead backend feature development from planning to production release.
- Diagnose and resolve scalability, performance, and reliability issues under real-world load.
- Raise the bar on testing, monitoring, and observability across the stack.
- Collaborate with frontend, product, and data teams to ensure seamless integrations.
Comfortability with being uncomfortable is a must, as experimentation is frequent at Blockworks.
Required Experience & Skills
We value backend engineers who think holistically about systems, anticipate edge cases, and balance speed and rigor when shipping code.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
- At least 5 years of professional experience as a Backend Engineer with a strong focus on backend development and architecture using TypeScript and Node.js.
- Proven ability to build fast, reliable API endpoints capable of handling over 1M requests per day.
- Mature approach to automated testing, monitoring, and observability.
- Highly proficient in designing and optimizing relational databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL, including data modeling and query optimization.
- Skilled at enhancing performance and scalability through caching mechanisms like Redis.
- Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment tools.
- Skilled at troubleshooting and problem-solving in fast-paced environments.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to writing clean, maintainable, and reusable code.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
Highly Desired Qualifications
- Experience working with frameworks like NestJS and database access layers such as TypeORM.
- Experience supporting legacy migrations in PHP.
- Familiarity with AWS cloud infrastructure.
- Exposure to ML/AI models.
- Hands-on experience in the crypto space.
Salary & Benefits
Compensation Range: $190,000 - $210,000/year (Full time exempt position)
