Quick Summary
Job Title: Tech Lead
Location: Remote, strictly on New York time (EST/EDT)
Job Type: Full-time
At Whizz, we are revolutionizing mobility for delivery drivers by eliminating barriers to vehicle access and ownership. We are actively seeking a Tech Lead to take full ownership of our entire codebase and lead a dedicated, small engineering team.
About the Role
As a Tech Lead, you will be responsible for the architecture and code quality across all Whizz systems, including the PHP core and billing, ERP, client area, mobile app, and People platform. Your duties will involve reviewing every code change before production deployment, managing the database architecture, and enhancing team efficiency through AI tools. This is a hands-on position, reporting directly to the founder.
Responsibilities
- Own the architecture and define the technical roadmap for all Whizz systems.
- Review every pull request before merging, maintaining a high standard for code quality.
- Design and maintain robust database architecture across MySQL and PostgreSQL.
- Manage Docker images, deployments, and environments.
- Drive AI-assisted development initiatives across the team, including agent instructions, prompts, and rules for reviewing AI-generated code.
- Translate product requirements into actionable technical tasks and mentor backend, frontend, and mobile developers.
- Lead incident response efforts and implement root-cause fixes.
Our Stack
Our technology stack includes PHP 8.3 / ProcessWire backend and cron workers on MySQL. The ERP and client area are built with Nuxt 3, Vue 3, and Quasar. Our mobile app uses Flutter, and the People platform is developed with Next.js, React, and PostgreSQL. We utilize Stripe for payments, Docker and CapRover for deployment, Metabase for reporting, and Gogs and GitHub for code management.
Requirements
- 6+ years of experience in backend development.
- 2+ years in a team leadership role.
- Expertise in PHP 8 and proficiency across our entire codebase: PHP, TypeScript (Vue / Nuxt, React / Next.js), and Flutter.
- Strong database architecture skills, including data modeling, migrations, and query optimization in MySQL and PostgreSQL.
- Proven experience with Docker in production environments.
- Daily use of AI development tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) and experience in writing agent instructions for a team.
- Code review as a daily discipline, with the ability to identify logic, data-safety, and security bugs, not just style issues.
- Experience with Stripe or a similar payment provider and REST API integrations.
- Native Russian speaker and fluent in English.
- Ability to work strictly on New York time (EST/EDT).
Nice to Have
- Hands-on ProcessWire development experience.
- Flutter development and app store release experience.
- Background in subscription billing or fintech.
- Experience with CapRover or another Docker PaaS, and CI/CD setup.
Benefits
- Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
- Full ownership of the technical stack and direct access to the founder.
- Remote work flexibility on a New York schedule.
- The opportunity to be part of an innovative company transforming the transportation industry.
