We are actively seeking a Principal Engineer who will combine hands-on execution with product ownership for automation tools. In this role, you will build services and automation while owning the roadmap for patch-processing tooling, prioritizing efforts based on impact, risk, and effort. You will collaborate with engineering and operations stakeholders to transform business needs into shippable deliverables and measurable outcomes.
What You'll Do
Engineering
- Write production-grade Python code (services, CLI tools, automation scripts)
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines on GitLab
- Rapidly prototype and convert successful experiments into production-ready solutions
- Enhance reliability and operability through improved logging, metrics, monitoring, and alerting systems
AI-Assisted Development
- Actively utilize modern AI tools daily to accelerate coding, refactoring, debugging, testing, and documentation
- Validate AI outputs, identify and address edge cases, and ensure the delivery of production-quality code
Product Owner
- Own the vision and roadmap for ELS Automation tools, prioritizing based on impact, risk, and effort
- Translate complex business needs into clear deliverables (including plans, user stories, acceptance criteria, and success metrics)
- Serve as the primary stakeholder interface, aligning requirements across engineering, release, and operations teams, and communicating trade-offs effectively
- Drive outcomes, including incident coordination when necessary, conducting post-mortems, and implementing continuous improvements
Requirements
Must have
- 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with recent daily Python coding proficiency
- Strong expertise in GitLab CI / GitHub workflows (including runners and pipelines)
- Solid understanding of Linux fundamentals (shell scripting, processes, networking, packaging)
- Comfort with observability tools and practices (logs, metrics, monitoring, alerting)
- Advanced use of LLM/AI tools to accelerate coding, refactoring, debugging, and testing, with a proven ability to validate outputs to production quality standards
- Demonstrated product ownership mindset: capable of owning a tool end-to-end, building and prioritizing a roadmap, and translating ambiguous requirements into concrete deliverables
- Comfortable working in a fast-changing, high-ambiguity environment; able to iterate quickly and adapt priorities as needed
- Startup and/or “builder” experience: has successfully shipped personal projects or worked in a startup-like setting with end-to-end responsibility
- Strong English communication skills for effective interaction with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
