Network Operations Engineer - VoIP

Velocity, a Managed Solutions Company, is seeking a skilled VoIP Engineer to join our Network Operations team. We require a strong background in both analog voice and Voice-over-IP (VoIP) technologies. This role is crucial for implementing and operating Velocity’s telephony and VoIP services, ensuring a superior customer experience across our diverse, vendor-agnostic national platforms.

The successful candidate will quickly master existing environments using documentation and independent discovery. This position is an individual contributor role.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary escalation contact for the Voice Network Operations Center (VNOC).
  • Operate and maintain Asterisk PBX systems, call management systems, and Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems across various geographic regions.
  • Apply expertise in VoIP technologies, focusing on delivering carrier services to hospitality and retail sectors.
  • Design solutions for hospitality and enterprise customers, adhering to industry best practices.
  • Act as the technical lead for projects requiring VoIP expertise.
  • Coordinate the installation, configuration, and testing of VoIP components.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for VoIP implementation and management.
  • Collaborate with the engineering function to align designs with current and future customer requirements, network platforms, and security compliance standards.
  • Engage and manage external vendors to enhance team capabilities.
  • Other duties and responsibilities, as assigned.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and provide off-hours support as needed.
  • This role may require up to 20% travel.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • 2+ years of experience implementing, troubleshooting, and maintaining VoIP systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of telephone networks, including POTS and VoIP.
  • Proficiency with telephony standards and protocols: H.323, MGCP, ISDN, SIP, RTP.
  • Expertise in IP networks and troubleshooting, including VoIP, NAT Traversal, and STUN.
  • Knowledge of programming and scripting (BASH / Python / JavaScript / PHP).
  • Experience working in Linux-based open-source environments and platforms.
  • Strong technical, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead complex projects within a cross-functional team environment.
  • Ability to articulate technical ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Physical ability to independently lift and carry 35 lbs.
  • Ability to hear ordinary conversations and phone communications.

Qualifications, Experience and Education:

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in technology or equivalent experience (5 years).
  • Required: Experience with Asterisk-based PBX installations.
  • Preferred: Experience in hospitality or service provider networks.
  • Preferred: Industry relevant training and certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP, dCAA, dCAP).
