BlackMill Games seeks a highly skilled and experienced Lead Unity & Console Developer to join our team working on our acclaimed series of WW1-themed multiplayer first-person shooters. This is a full-time, fully remote position (5 days a week).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Technical Feature Ownership: Take ownership of specific technical features, ensuring the highest quality implementation and performance standards.
  • Console Development Expertise: Support development efforts for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, guaranteeing robust performance and strict adherence to TRC/XR compliance requirements.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with design, art, and production teams to accurately estimate tasks, define technical scope, and maintain project alignment across all disciplines.
  • Team Leadership & Mentorship: Manage development staff, mentor junior developers, and actively participate in the hiring process to cultivate a high-performing engineering team.
  • Code Standards & Scalability: Enforce a robust, reusable code mindset within the team, promoting maintainable and scalable solutions. Propose innovative concepts based on strong industry trend awareness.
  • Project Planning & Resource Allocation: Coordinate planning efforts and resource allocation with other leads, ensuring efficient team utilization and alignment with overall project goals. Assist with effort estimations and breaking down complex technical challenges.

About The WW1 Game Series

The WW1 Game Series features intense multiplayer first-person shooters that deliver authentic and immersive First World War action on PC and Console. The series includes Verdun (2015), Tannenberg (2019), and the critically-acclaimed Isonzo (2022). Joining us means contributing to an established franchise focused on continuous quality and innovation.

Required Skills & Experience (Mandatory):

  • 5+ years of professional experience working on Unity projects.
  • Deep understanding of core Unity engine features and workflows (e.g., prefab setup, asset importers, terrain, colliders).
  • Proficiency with core standard Unity packages, including UGUI, Profiling tools, Animations/Animator, Cinemachine (+ Timeline), Addressables, and UIToolkit.
  • Strong C# programming skills.
  • Proficiency using Rider/VS IDEs for code writing, formatting, and debugging.
  • Experience working with multiplayer code and networking systems.
  • Ability to produce clean, understandable code and clear commit messages.
  • Console Development Expertise: Proven understanding of Xbox/PlayStation TRC/XR compliance, build specifications, and the certification process.
  • Previous experience managing and/or mentoring remote teams, ideally with diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Strong grasp of the game development lifecycle, including pre-production, effort estimation, adherence to best practices, and managing the release pipeline.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and comfort working in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong interest in the FPS genre and current trends.
  • Exceptional communication skills necessary for effective cross-functional collaboration and team alignment.
  • Fluent English language skills.

Additional Mandatory Requirements:

  • Experience with SVN or other version control systems.
  • Available for 36 hours per week.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a fully remote capacity.
  • Self-motivated and collaborative mindset.
  • Must be located in Europe (within 2 hours time difference from Amsterdam).

Bonus Skills & Experience:

  • Experience developing for Steam and Epic platforms.
  • Familiarity with PlayFab or Fmod.
  • Understanding of PHP.
  • Knowledge of Unity’s HDRP or Unity’s ECS/JobSystem.
  • Experience working on mature codebases.
  • Experience with Photoshop or equivalent software, or 3D software.
  • Passion for WW1 history.
