eCoach builds digital learning platforms and online training for organizations across sport and education. Our platforms include learner dashboards, qualification pathways, tutor workflows, attendance tracking, compliance, and integrations with external systems.
We're looking for a Lead Developer to take ownership of our technical work as we grow. You'll manage and support one other developer, turn client requirements into practical technical solutions, and take responsibility for getting projects delivered.
You'll report directly to our Founder/CEO, who leads client relationships, commercial decisions, and overall business priorities. Within that, you'll own the technical approach and day-to-day delivery, and you'll join client conversations directly to explain technical options and agree solutions.
Most of your time will be spent developing, debugging, reviewing code, and planning technical work. Managing the other developer is part of the role, but proportionate to a team of two rather than a full management position.
In this role, you will:
- Design and build new functionality, and improve our existing platforms.
- Manage and support our other developer: allocate technical work, review code, and help them develop.
- Work with clients and turn their requirements into practical technical solutions.
- Break work into achievable tasks, provide realistic estimates, and flag dependencies early.
- Take ownership of agreed development milestones and communicate risks as soon as they arise.
- Oversee testing, security, technical documentation, and release readiness.
- Explain technical options clearly to clients and colleagues.
- Balance new development with maintaining and supporting existing systems.
Our stack:
PHP, custom WordPress plugins, SQL/MySQL, JavaScript, jQuery, HTML, CSS, JSON, and API integrations. You'll be working with structured code, complex business rules, authentication, and data handling day to day.
What you'll need:
- Strong commercial experience with PHP and custom WordPress development, including plugins, hooks, and working with WordPress data.
- A solid understanding of software architecture and experience writing clean, maintainable code.
- Confidence with SQL databases, including custom tables and troubleshooting data issues.
- Practical JavaScript, HTML, and CSS skills.
- Experience building or maintaining APIs and integrations, including authentication, JSON, and error handling.
- Confidence with Git, code review, testing, and managing releases.
- Experience leading development work, or supporting and mentoring another developer.
- The ability to explain technical matters clearly to non-technical clients and colleagues.
- Good judgment balancing functionality, quality, time, and budget.
Useful but not essential:
- WooCommerce, Gravity Forms, or Advanced Custom Fields.
- Experience with learning platforms, qualification systems, or other software with complex workflows and business rules.
- Data migration or synchronization between systems.
