Responsibilities
The IT Systems Engineer is responsible for maintaining and supporting moderately complex systems software and hardware computer systems across multiple Mayo Clinic sites, operating under general supervision and guidance.
- Actively monitor and respond to technical hardware and software problems using specialized testing tools and techniques.
- Assist in managing overall system capacity.
- Interface with vendor support services or external support teams to ensure proper escalation during system outages or periods of degraded performance.
- Contribute to the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of custom system software.
- Install and maintain purchased systems software, plus configure and support hardware systems across Mayo Clinic.
- Produce and maintain essential documentation, including system requirements, designs, resource inventories, and plans, as requested by leadership.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with I.T. technical staff and management across all Mayo sites while supporting multiple simultaneous projects.

Qualifications
Candidates must meet one of the following minimum requirements:
- A Bachelor’s degree combined with training/experience in IT technology; OR
- An Associate degree plus 3 years of demonstrated technical experience; OR
- A high school diploma and 5 years of demonstrated IT technical experience within a large, complex organization (like Mayo).
Required Skills & Experience
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills using English.
- Knowledge of system design principles, software development methodologies, and project management methodologies.
- Experience in system hardware design, ordering, configuration, testing, and implementation for large projects.
- Some computer programming and/or system support experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in healthcare technology.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field; Master’s degree in a relevant technical discipline is helpful.
- Relevant IT certifications (e.g., MCSE, CCNA).
- Exposure to managing both custom developed and vendor-supplied applications.
- Advanced knowledge of multiple operating systems, including configuration, internals, and maintenance processes.
- Working knowledge of the following technologies:
- Client/Server application architecture.
- Clustering, VB, and scripting tools.
- Databases: MS SQL Server, Oracle, My SQL, DB2, or Sybase.
- Web Architecture: HTML, JavaScript, Active Server Pages (ASP), PHP.
- Network topologies and protocols (e.g., IEEE 802.3, 802.11a/b/g, 802.1x, TCP/IP).
- Storage environments: SAN, NAS, and virtualized storage.
Logistics & Compensation
- Exemption Status: Exempt
- Compensation Detail: $86,632 - $121,347 / year
- Benefits Eligible: Yes
- Schedule: Full Time (80 Hours/Pay Period)
- Schedule Details: Monday - Friday, 8am – 5pm.
- Weekend Schedule: Occasional weekends and evening coverage required. Participation in 24 x 7 on-call rotation is mandatory.
