Infrastructure Engineer II (SRE/DevOps) - Remote Australia

Welcome to the Agentic Commerce Era. At Commerce, the parent company of BigCommerce, Feedonomics, and Makeswift, our mission is to empower businesses to innovate, grow, and thrive with our open, AI-driven commerce ecosystem. We help businesses confidently solve complex commerce challenges so they can build smarter, adapt faster, and grow on their own terms.

Commerce, recognized as a “Great Place to Work” in Australia, is seeking a full-time Infrastructure Engineer II. This position can be fully remote in Australia or hybrid based in Sydney.

The Role: Infrastructure Engineering

As an Infrastructure Engineer, you will join our Infrastructure Engineering team to design and build the systems that maintain the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of the Commerce platform. This role blends software engineering and web operations skills, sharing similarities with DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) roles.

We predominantly work with Golang, Python, Ruby, and PHP, backed by Puppet for configuration management and Terraform for infrastructure management/provisioning. We operate remote-first, prioritize team success, value innovative problem solving, and strive for operational efficiency.

What You’ll Do

  • Build, maintain, and improve the infrastructure that powers Commerce’s platform.
  • Apply software engineering and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles to automate, monitor, and scale our systems.
  • Collaborate closely with other engineers to connect infrastructure and application layers.
  • Use infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, Puppet) to manage configuration and provisioning.
  • Contribute to system observability using metrics, logging, tracing, and alerting tools.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure issues in partnership with Engineering and Support teams.
  • Participate in our on-call rotation to help maintain platform reliability.
  • Continuously look for opportunities to simplify, optimize, and improve how we work.

Who You Are (Required Skills)

You enjoy solving complex infrastructure problems through code and are collaborative, curious, and eager to learn. You may come from a software engineering background with an interest in operations, or vice versa.

  • 3–5 years of experience supporting or developing large-scale Linux-based web environments.
  • Preferred Minimum Bachelor's degree in CS, EE, SW, CE, MIS; or equivalent experience or completion of a comprehensive software engineering boot camp.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming or scripting languages (e.g., Golang, Ruby, Python, PHP, Bash).
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes, Nomad, ECS, or GKE).
  • Familiarity with configuration management (e.g., Puppet, Chef, or Ansible).
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, or Deployment Manager).
  • Knowledge of observability tools (e.g., ELK, Prometheus, Datadog, Sentry, or Lightstep).
  • Strong communication skills, especially when working with distributed teams (Sydney, Austin, Kyiv, and San Francisco).
  • Experience with databases, document storage, and object storage systems.
