Orygen Digital offers a fully remote, permanent, full-time Full Stack Engineer position. Candidates from across Australia are considered for this ongoing role within a passionate, agile engineering team dedicated to a national youth mental health service.

About Orygen

Orygen stands as Australia’s Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health and the world's largest translational research organization focused on youth mental health.

For over 30 years, Orygen has pioneered groundbreaking early intervention strategies and developed evidence-based care models to enhance mental health outcomes for young people aged 12-25.

About the job

Young people across Australia rely on MOST daily for support, whether in crisis, starting their journey, or connecting with a clinician. The quality of their experience is directly shaped by the engineers who build the platform.

As a Full Stack Engineer at Orygen Digital, you will be responsible for delivering end-to-end features across backend, API, and frontend systems. You will collaborate closely with product, design, research, and clinical teams, contributing to shared engineering standards and fostering your professional growth.

MOST has grown from a research project into a national youth mental health service. While foundations have been strengthened through improved testing, CI/CD, infrastructure, and on-call practices, there is still significant work ahead, and this role is crucial for the next phase of development.

In this role you will:

  • Develop and own full-stack features, from backend services and APIs to frontend interfaces, ensuring they are well-tested, maintainable, and of high quality.
  • Actively partner with product, design, research, and clinical colleagues to translate complex requirements into reliable, accessible, and performant user experiences for young people and health professionals.
  • Contribute to the Engineering Chapter, helping to define and uphold shared standards, practices, and technical direction to elevate the entire engineering organization's capability.
  • Handle sensitive clinical and personal data with utmost care, ensuring systems comply with healthcare regulations, privacy obligations, and accreditation standards.
  • Participate in a compensated on-call rotation, performing triage and incident response to maintain MOST's availability for the young people and clinicians who depend on it.

Skills and experience

The following criteria are essential for consideration:

  • Strong command of Python and/or PHP, with proven experience building scalable, maintainable, and performant server-side applications in a production environment.
  • Solid familiarity with RESTful API design and database capabilities across relational stores such as MariaDB or PostgreSQL.
  • Confidence working with CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker), and cloud-native services, with practical AWS experience preferred.
  • Solid frontend capability in Vue.js, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, and CSS, sufficient for end-to-end full-stack feature delivery.
  • Clear, honest communicator, both written and verbal, capable of articulating technical trade-offs to engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.

Benefits

  • Salary range of $110,000 - $135,000, commensurate with skills and experience, plus 12% superannuation, $15,900 in NFP salary packaging, and a $2,600 meals and entertainment card.
  • Fully remote position, offering flexibility to work from anywhere. The Melbourne Parkville office is available for team face-to-face interaction.
  • A structured professional development framework based on the 70/20/10 model, incorporating hands-on delivery, peer learning, and a dedicated budget for conferences, training, and external development.
  • Work that directly and measurably impacts the lives of young people during vulnerable moments.
  • Join a team that has diligently rebuilt engineering foundations over the past year, demonstrating care, conviction, and craft.
  • Thrive in a supportive, inclusive culture that values diversity and promotes wellbeing.
  • Access to purchase additional leave, Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and a generous Parental Leave Scheme.
