Our customers entrust us with their most precious digital asset—their data. We are seeking a Software Engineer to join our core engineering team and help build the next generation of database infrastructure.
What You Will Do
- Advise and handle support requests from enterprise customers on the PlanetScale platform.
- Become a customer-facing subject-matter expert for enterprise customers regarding the PlanetScale platform.
- Identify product gaps in a customer-specific context and collaborate with Technical Account Management, Engineering, and Sales Engineering teams to prioritize and escalate them.
- Participate in an on-call rotation for high-priority issues.
Candidate Profile
- Comfortable interacting with customers; empathetic but capable of pushing back appropriately to ensure customer success.
- Excellent debugging and troubleshooting skills, combining experience and intuition to pinpoint root causes for complex bugs.
- Comfortable stepping outside your comfort zone, whether delving into unfamiliar code in Vitess, its dependencies, or random MySQL connectors written in various languages.
- Able to work with code as the primary source of documentation and willing to add/correct documentation as necessary.
- Capable of operating independently, but knowing when to ask for help when necessary.
- Able to work effectively under pressure during urgent situations related to the data platform.
Required Qualifications
- Experience supporting production databases and applications, preferably at scale.
- Experience with database internals and performance tuning, specifically for PostgreSQL and MySQL databases.
- Working knowledge of Kubernetes.
- Strong ability to communicate and deal directly with customers via email, Slack, video conference, or in person.
Helpful Skills
- Knowledge of common application deployment platforms and frameworks (e.g., Python, Go, Node, PHP).
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
- Knowledge of monitoring, observability, and debugging tools.
- Contributions to open-source projects, especially in the database or infrastructure space.

Total Compensation and Pay Transparency: An employee's total compensation includes base salary, variable compensation (where appropriate), benefits, and equity. The salary range for this position is US $120,000 - $200,000.
