Who are we?
Auction Technology Group (ATG) is transforming the multi-billion-dollar global auction industry. Our platforms connect thousands of auction houses with buyers in over 170 countries, powering more than $15 billion in annual sales. Through innovative online auction technologies, we help auctioneers expand their reach, boost efficiency, and maximize value—while giving bidders unrivaled access to rare and specialized items.
As a publicly traded company, ATG has scaled from $18 million to $170 million in revenue, with sustained growth beyond the pandemic. We're modernizing one of the last industries to fully go digital—building a global, category-defining business in the process.
Some problems we are working on in the LiveAuctioneers platform:
- How do we build reliable, scalable microservices that power critical experiences like payments and shipping?
- How do we ensure high availability and performance across distributed systems under peak auction load?
- How do we design event-driven architectures that decouple services while maintaining data consistency?
- How do we improve observability across our microservices architecture to reduce mean time to resolution?
- How do we accelerate delivery cadence while preserving safety and quality in production systems?
...and many more such questions.
Your Mission
Drive engineering excellence across our backend platform — enabling reliable, scalable services that power payments, shipping, and the core commerce experience at LiveAuctioneers.
- Define and drive engineering excellence across the team
- Own end-to-end delivery of the team’s projects from design through production
- Ensure continued service reliability, performance, and timely technical support for all stakeholders
- Collaborate with Product, Operations, and Architecture to define and drive the platform roadmap
- Manage career development of engineers through continuous coaching and mentoring
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with stakeholders to deeply understand business priorities and translate them into clear technical strategies for backend services supporting payments, shipping, and platform capabilities.
- Balance partner needs by designing solutions that advance platform reliability and scalability while enabling fast, confident feature delivery.
- Oversee the end-to-end delivery of backend microservices built in GoLang, ensuring production-grade quality, observability, and operational readiness at each stage.
- Champion solid software development practices including code review standards, testing strategies (unit, integration, contract), CI/CD pipelines, and production deployment processes.
- Drive the adoption of event-driven patterns while ensuring the team designs for resilience and fault tolerance.
- Ensure the team operates effective Agile ceremonies — sprint planning, standups, retrospectives — and continuously improves velocity and predictability.
- Grow, mentor, and develop a team of backend engineers, fostering a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Provide technical and organizational leadership, ensuring execution excellence while crafting a long-term strategy for the platform’s architecture and infrastructure.
Key Requirements
- 3+ years of experience leading a cross-functional engineering team as an Engineering Manager.
- Bachelor’s/Master’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Proven hands-on background in backend systems development, with strong familiarity with GoLang, Python, PHP or comparable web application development technologies and a clear ability to lead teams working in that stack.
- Deep expertise in microservices architecture, including service decomposition, API design, inter-service communication, and data ownership patterns.
- Solid experience with container orchestration using Kubernetes, covering deployment, scaling, resource management, and operational best practices.
- Strong understanding of message broker systems, particularly RabbitMQ and/or Kafka, and the design of reliable event-driven workflows.
- Proficiency with relational databases (MySQL) including schema design, query optimization, and data integrity in a microservices context.
- Demonstrated commitment to the full software development lifecycle: design and architecture, testing (unit, integration, end-to-end), production deployments (blue/green, canary), and post-deployment observability (logging, metrics, alerting, tracing).
- Fluency with Agile methodologies — sprints, scrum, backlog refinement — and experience continuously improving team delivery practices.
- Comfortable navigating ambiguity; able to decompose complex problems into clear, manageable work for the team.
- Effective communicator who can explain technical decisions and trade-offs to engineers, product managers, and senior leadership.
- Role model for engineering excellence, fostering a culture of quality, collaboration, and continuous learning.
- Proven expertise in stakeholder management and building strong cross-functional relationships.
- Strong business understanding to drive informed, pragmatic engineering decisions.
