Job Summary: The Computer Programmer designs, develops, tests, and maintains software applications and systems that support Denison Ministries' digital platforms and internal operations, ensuring technology solutions align with the ministry's mission and values.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have direct reports; however, the programmer may provide technical guidance to junior staff or interns on a project basis.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, debug, and maintain web and software applications used across the organization.
  • Write clean, efficient, well-documented code in one or more languages including Python, JavaScript, PHP, or C#.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to gather and analyze requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
  • Integrate third-party APIs, payment platforms, content management systems, and ministry-specific tools.
  • Maintain and improve existing codebases, perform code reviews, and ensure version control best practices using Git.
  • Manage and optimize databases (SQL/NoSQL), write queries, and ensure data integrity and security.
  • Troubleshoot, identify root causes, and resolve software defects and performance issues in a timely manner.
  • Participate in Agile/Scrum development cycles, sprint planning, and team stand-ups.
  • Document technical processes, system architecture, and developer guidelines.
  • All other duties as assigned by the Director of Technology.
  • Ensure that performance and conduct align with the ministry’s Statement of Faith, Core Values, Organizational Playbook, and Employee Handbook.

Requirements

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, PHP, Java, or C#.
  • Experience with front-end frameworks (React, Vue, or Angular) and back-end frameworks (Node.js, Django, or Laravel).
  • Familiarity with relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases (MongoDB).
  • Working knowledge of version control systems, particularly Git and GitHub/GitLab workflows.
  • Understanding of RESTful API design, integration, and third-party API consumption.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) and DevOps practices is preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Commitment to ethical conduct and alignment with a faith-based organizational culture.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field required; equivalent work experience may be considered.
  • Relevant certifications such as AWS Certified Developer, Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer, or Google Associate Cloud Engineer are a plus.
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of professional software development experience required; 4+ years preferred.
  • Experience working in a nonprofit, ministry, or mission-driven organization is a plus.
