Moonwake Collaborative, a growing virtual assistant and digital marketing agency, supports small businesses with marketing, design, strategy, and operational assistance. We are seeking a contract Web Developer / Website Builder to join our team.

This role is ideal for a professional who excels in the technical aspects of website development and possesses a strong design sensibility to create polished, strategic, template-based websites. While we have an in-house designer, the successful candidate will be responsible for building clean, modern, user-friendly, professional, and functional websites.

Position Overview

We are looking for a dependable and detail-oriented contractor to build and maintain websites for diverse small business clients. Projects may involve collaborating with our designer on custom branded designs or developing high-quality websites using templates and established visual guidelines.

The ideal candidate combines technical proficiency with visual thoughtfulness. They should be adept at making design decisions within template frameworks, implementing responsive websites, troubleshooting technical issues, and collaborating with our internal team to deliver successful client projects.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the Art Director to translate Figma/Sketch designs into pixel-perfect, responsive web experiences.
• Customize website templates to ensure they are polished, strategic, and align with client branding.
• Create websites and interfaces using standard HTML/CSS practices, integrating data from back-end databases and services.
• Handle front-end website development and light to moderate code customization.
• Implement mobile-responsive, user-friendly website layouts.
• Perform website updates and edits requested by clients, develop plans for larger projects, and suggest improvements for existing websites.
• Provide ongoing website maintenance services to clients.
• Troubleshoot website issues, bugs, formatting errors, and plugin conflicts.
• Optimize websites for performance, functionality, and basic SEO best practices.
• Collaborate with Moonwake’s internal team, including project management, strategy, copy, and design.
• Adhere to project timelines and communicate clearly about progress, roadblocks, and needs.
• Apply a strong visual eye when building within templates, even when full custom design is not explicitly required.
• Meet regularly with stakeholders and managers to review business and functional requirements, defining project scopes and specifications.
• Ensure websites are clean, functional, professional, and easy for clients to navigate.
• Perform UI design and coding, creating reusable objects and wireframes for web pages and email templates.
• Conduct regular file backups to local directories.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in planning and developing websites across various products and organizations.
• Dedication to innovative, sophisticated designs and collaborative problem-solving.
• Extensive knowledge of web applications, programming languages, and web services, including API, CSS, CSS3, cross-browser compatibility, HTML, HTML5, JavaScript, jQuery, PHP, security principles, REST, SOAP, and web user interface design.
• Strong working knowledge of multiple website platforms, including Wix, Squarespace, Showit, WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, and other template-based builders.
• Strong understanding of user experience (UX), layout, spacing, and visual hierarchy.
• Strong front-end development skills and comfort with code customization.
• Ability to work effectively within templates while creating custom, intentional, and on-brand sites.
• Experience with responsive design across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.
• Ability to troubleshoot technical issues independently.
• Comfortable collaborating with a remote team and taking direction.
• Strong time management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills.
• Comfortable with client-facing interactions and representing Moonwake.

Preferred Experience

• Experience with platforms such as WordPress, Squarespace, Showit, Wix, Shopify, or Webflow.
• Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
• Familiarity with SEO fundamentals and website optimization.
• Experience integrating forms, schedulers, email platforms, and third-party tools.
• Experience supporting multiple clients or agency-style work.
• Ability to work from brand guidelines, mockups, or creative direction provided by another team member.
