Qualifications
This is not an entry-level position. We require candidates to have professional experience in software development. Seasoned developers will thrive with our balance of independence and support, while entry-level developers may require more direct oversight than we provide.
You should possess critical and theoretical thinking skills regarding human-computer interactions. JavaScript is our preferred language for these interactions, so fluency in building front-end components using native DOM APIs (including element creation, querying, manipulation, events, event handling, and data fetching) in a professional context is essential.
Our primary server-side development language is PHP. While not mandatory, professional experience with PHP is beneficial.
We value making the web indexable and accessible. You should demonstrate a deep and practical understanding of semantic HTML5, with prior professional experience.
Translating designs into CSS is a core client service. It is crucial to understand modern CSS concepts such as flexbox, CSS Custom Properties, and CSS Grid. Familiarity with CSS preprocessors, their syntax, and usage is also important.
You should be comfortable with modern ES standards and understand transpilers and module bundlers. Familiarity with Node.js and webpack is a significant advantage.
Maintainable code is key to a maintainable website. This involves separating presentation and business logic and creating clean, organized front-end templates. Understanding React components, JSX, and PHP Templating is a strong plus.
Alley prioritizes site performance, ensuring websites are beautiful, usable, and fast. You should be familiar with front-end speed and performance concerns and common optimization strategies.
Users access sites in diverse ways, so you must be adept at addressing compatibility issues and systematically testing your work across various devices and browsers.
Comfort with a Unix command line is expected, even if you are not an expert.
Proficiency in Git and version control is required, including operations like branching, merging, submitting code for peer review, and reviewing others' code.
Our projects predominantly utilize WordPress as a CMS. Prior experience with WordPress and/or PHP is a major asset.
We employ Scrum as a development methodology and embrace the Agile philosophy. You must be open to this working style, and previous experience is a plus.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential for effective interaction with both team members and clients.
Key skills for our developers include discipline regarding delivery dates, an appreciation for readable code, and a commitment to documentation, user stories, issue tracking, and timesheets.

Benefits
We offer competitive salaries, recognizing various levels of career progression for developers with compensation tied to seniority and experience. The salary range for these roles is $85,000-$105,000, with current base salaries starting at $85,000 and $90,000. Higher-level candidates are encouraged to apply for additional opportunities.
