The Senior Learning Management System Administrator will take end-to-end ownership of the Moodle LMS. This critical role involves managing Linux servers and databases, from the infrastructure layer to the application layer, ensuring an optimal experience for faculty and students. Sitting at the intersection of systems administration and educational technology, the ideal candidate will be proficient in SQL query tuning, Redis cache optimization, and supporting instructional designers in course development. Collaboration with IT, instructional designers, and educators is key to ensuring the LMS effectively supports course delivery, user experience, and data management. This position demands in-depth expertise in Moodle administration and Linux server management, with potential responsibilities for other Linux systems. The Senior Learning Management System Administrator reports directly to the Director of Network Services.
Responsibilities:
Platform and Infrastructure
- Administer Linux servers (web, database, file, and cache) within the Moodle environment, including performance tuning and capacity planning.
- Oversee system monitoring, usage-based performance analysis, and reporting for optimization.
- Implement and maintain backups, access controls, and security hardening to safeguard user data and system integrity.
- Apply Moodle updates and security patches on a defined cadence, leading major upgrades and migrations.
- Contribute to broader Linux system administration and data center infrastructure maintenance.
- Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation.
Moodle Application and Integrations
- Configure and maintain the Moodle LMS (plugins, themes, roles, enrollment workflows) for optimal performance and availability.
- Manage integrations for user accounts, permissions, and course enrollments.
- Ensure reliable functionality of LTI and SCORM integrations and other system connections across the LMS and adjacent applications.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues across server, database, and application layers.
End-User Experience and Collaboration
- Partner with instructional designers and educators to align the LMS with curriculum and training needs.
- Provide direct technical support and training to faculty and staff on LMS usage and best practices.
- Collaborate with IT colleagues for seamless integration between the LMS and other University systems.
Leadership
- Operate independently, exercising sound judgment in system and project decisions.
- Lead projects and, when applicable, provide direct supervision to technical staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education:
Minimal Qualifications:- Completion of secondary education (high school) or equivalent.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, or a related field.
Experience:
Minimal Experience:- Five to seven years of system administration experience.
- Design, planning, and implementation of at least one major system or service.
- Project leadership for the implementation of at least one major project or service.
- Over ten years of system administration, demonstrating increasing responsibility and leadership.
- Knowledge of digital accessibility and WCAG 2.1 AA requirements.
- Direct management experience with at least one part-time or full-time technical staff member.
- Project leadership or management for multiple concurrent major projects or services.
Essential Skills:
- Proven experience in administering and maintaining Moodle-based Learning Management Systems (LMS), including Canvas, Sakai, or similar open-source platforms.
- Strong proficiency in Linux server administration.
- Knowledge of eLearning standards such as SCORM and LTI.
- In-depth knowledge of PHP, MariaDB, Apache web server, or comparable technologies.
- Familiarity with web technologies including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and XML.
- Experience with system monitoring and performance tuning.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
