As a Contract Senior Web Engineer, you will architect foundational systems for dynamic, large-scale digital experiences. This role requires defining the technical backbone of projects, leveraging deep WordPress expertise to deliver robust, scalable solutions using modern PHP and sophisticated Gutenberg architecture. You will ensure platforms are performant and maintainable, setting a high bar for back-end craftsmanship and mentoring the team.

What you will do:
- Architect and build the core of enterprise-level WordPress solutions.
- Develop high-performance plugins and themes using modern PHP and sophisticated Gutenberg blocks built in React.js.
- Define the back-end technical vision and strategy for large-scale projects, making critical decisions regarding architecture, performance, and scalability.
- Elevate team output by providing expert code reviews focused on quality, security, and maintainability.
- Solve complex performance and caching challenges, transforming systems into fast, resilient platforms capable of handling millions of visitors.
What you will achieve:
- Within your first month: Take ownership of a significant back-end feature or system, shipping code that demonstrates architectural expertise.
- By the 3-month mark: Champion a performance or caching improvement resulting in a measurable increase in site speed or stability for a client project.
- Provide technical guidance that directly shapes a project’s strategy, leading to the implementation and praise of your architectural recommendations.
- Establish a new pattern or best practice for WordPress development adopted by other engineers, elevating collective team output.
- By the end of your contract: Leave a legacy of robust, well-architected systems performing at scale, along with a standing invitation for future collaboration.
About you:
- Deep passion for pushing WordPress limits, with expert-level mastery in modern PHP and a sophisticated understanding of the Gutenberg ecosystem.
- A strong GitHub portfolio showcasing real-world WordPress code and demonstrating the ability to build elegant, scalable solutions (no whiteboard tests required).
- Strategic partner and communicator, comfortable leading technical discussions with clients and translating business needs into a powerful technical vision.
- Mastery of the back-end development lifecycle, including extensive Git workflow experience.
- Proven ability to expertly debug and optimize complex systems.
- Thrive on a distributed team, proactively collaborating and leading remotely.
Contractor fee
Compensation is determined based on a variety of factors including relevant experience, projects, geographic location, and business needs.
