Senior Software Engineer, Product Safety & Integrity

Join the Wikimedia Foundation's Product Safety and Integrity Team as a Senior Software Engineer. This is a mostly-remote role focused on collaboration and teamwork. You will contribute to technology that powers Wikipedia and its sister projects, serving billions of pageviews monthly across hundreds of languages. This unique opportunity allows you to protect free access to information globally and contribute to one of the world's largest knowledge-sharing platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Proactively develop and maintain anti-abuse tools that empower communities to identify, mitigate, and prevent various forms of abuse across Wikimedia projects.
  • Design privacy-conscious systems for detecting behavioral patterns indicative of abuse, minimizing false positives while respecting user anonymity.
  • Continuously adapt abuse detection and mitigation strategies based on changes in browser privacy standards, networking protocols, and platform architecture.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, designers, and researchers to create holistic, human-centered solutions that balance safety and freedom.
  • Write resilient, maintainable systems and high-quality code focused on long-term sustainability.
  • Implement observability practices to maintain high levels of quality and system stability.
  • Instrument and measure the impact of anti-abuse efforts across Wikimedia projects.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • 4+ years of related professional experience in software engineering.
  • Experience building and maintaining large-scale applications.
  • Proficiency in PHP, Javascript, and relational databases.

The anticipated annual pay range for applicants based within the United States is US$141,352 to US$175,725. Offered pay is determined by multiple individualized factors, including cost of living in the location. For applicants located outside of the US, the pay range will be adjusted to the country of hire. Compensation is based on skills, experience, and location.
