Senior Backend Developer (Python, Java)

We are seeking a Senior Backend Developer with expertise in Python and Java to contribute to a multi-year ANZ engineering transformation. This role involves building new features, maintaining critical platforms, working with modern and legacy systems, resolving production issues, and adopting AI-assisted delivery practices using tools like GitHub Copilot.

Responsibilities

• Develop new features and enhancements for customer-facing platforms and internal products.
• Provide production support, incident resolution, and continuous improvement for business-critical applications.
• Engineer solutions across a mixed technology stack, focusing on Python and Java, while managing legacy components.
• Troubleshoot complex issues across services, integrations, and environments with a pragmatic, problem-solving approach.
• Collaborate effectively in cross-functional Agile teams (Scrum, Kanban).
• Clearly communicate technical trade-offs, project progress, and operational updates to Australia and New Zealand stakeholders.
• Contribute to AI-assisted engineering practices, including AI-supported analysis, coding, and testing.
• Participate in on-call support coverage to meet operational requirements.

Requirements

• Proven experience in building and supporting applications with Python and Java.
• Ability to function as a polyglot engineer, working across multiple programming languages.
• Strong knowledge of production support practices, including incident triage, root-cause analysis, and remediation.
• Exposure to PHP and/or Node.js in enterprise environments.
• Adaptability to learn or refresh skills in older technologies for legacy system support.
• Excellent spoken English communication for collaboration with Australia and New Zealand teams.
• A mindset aligned with a managed-services environment, balancing feature delivery with operational priorities.

Nice to have

• Experience in managed services, long-term support, or Keep-The-Lights-On (KTLO) engagements.
• Exposure to modernization programs that balance stability with incremental improvement.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools like GitHub Copilot.
• Experience with Spec-Driven Development (SDD) and Test-Driven Development (TDD).
