Job Overview
As a QA Engineer, you will take full ownership of quality for ThriveCart's e-commerce platform. This includes developing test strategies, implementing test automation, focusing on defect prevention, and monitoring production health. This role emphasizes deep ownership of quality within your domain, moving beyond simple test case execution.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is integral to our workflow, not an optional skill. You will leverage AI daily for generating test cases, creating test data, drafting test plans, and accelerating automation development. We seek individuals with strong judgment to prioritize critical tests, understand inherent risks, and critically evaluate AI-generated outputs.
What You'll Own
Test Strategy & Planning
- Develop and own the quality strategy for your assigned features and domain, including test plans, risk assessment, and test coverage decisions.
- Identify ambiguities and testability gaps during requirements review, promoting a shift-left quality approach before code implementation.
- Collaborate with Product teams to define clear acceptance criteria.
- Strategically balance manual exploratory testing with comprehensive automated regression coverage.
- Document test plans, coverage decisions, and known risk areas to ensure asynchronous visibility across the team.
Test Automation
- Write and maintain automated tests (API testing, integration testing, end-to-end testing) utilizing established team frameworks.
- Ensure automation suites remain fast, reliable, and maintainable, actively resolving any flaky tests.
- Maintain CI/CD integration for efficient test execution.
Production Quality & Incident Response
- Monitor features in production using observability tools, recognizing that quality assurance extends beyond release.
- Respond promptly to developer escalations and incidents: assess blast radius, conduct targeted regression testing, assist in isolating root causes, and communicate findings clearly.
AI-Augmented QA (Expected, Not Optional)
- Utilize AI tools daily for tasks such as generating test cases and test data, drafting test plans, analyzing bug patterns, and accelerating automation script writing.
- Ruthlessly prioritize AI-generated test cases based on risk, as AI will produce more than necessary.
- Critically review all AI-generated test output, applying your product context where AI lacks it.
Defect Advocacy & Communication
- Create clear, reproducible bug reports that enable immediate action by developers.
- Act as a quality advocate: identify and flag risks pre-release, document known issues, and clearly communicate tested and untested areas.
Collaboration
- Work closely with developers to enhance testability at the code level.
- Support developers in writing more effective unit tests by identifying untested scenarios.
What You Bring To This Role
Technical Environment
- Testing Tools: Experience with API testing (e.g., Postman, REST clients), browser automation (e.g., Playwright), and unit/integration test frameworks.
- CI/CD: Familiarity with GitHub Actions for continuous integration (tests run on every PR).
- Observability: Proficiency with AWS CloudWatch, application logs, and metrics dashboards.
- Platform Stack: Exposure to PHP/TypeScript, Ruby/TypeScript, MariaDB, Redis, and AWS technologies.
- While Playwright is our standard for browser automation, strong testing fundamentals are paramount.
Must-haves
- Strong testing fundamentals, including expertise in test strategy, test case design, and risk-based prioritization.
- Hands-on automation experience with Playwright.
- Comfort with API testing (Postman/REST clients) and the ability to read application logs.
- Demonstrated use of — or strong motivation to integrate — AI tools in a QA workflow.
- Excellent written communication skills for crafting clear bug reports and test plans that facilitate action without meetings.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience testing e-commerce, payments, or subscription platforms.
- Familiarity with PHP, TypeScript, or Ruby codebases.
- Experience with AWS/CloudWatch or similar observability tooling.
- Proficiency with GitHub Actions or other CI/CD pipelines.
Expectations by Level
- L1 (Junior QA) — 0–1 yrs: Executes test plans, writes simple automation with guidance, and reports bugs clearly. Bootcamp, internship, or early professional QA experience is valued for rigor and curiosity. Utilizes AI for accelerated learning and test case generation, validating all AI output.
- L2 (QA Engineer 1) — 1–3 yrs: Independently owns quality for a feature or product area, developing comprehensive test plans and automation suites. Responds to incidents with targeted testing.
- L3 (Senior QA) — 3–6 yrs: Leads incident response from the QA perspective and mentors other QA professionals. Owns quality strategy for complex projects, enhances automation architecture and infrastructure, and leverages AI to multiply output.
- L4 (Lead QA) — 6+ yrs: Establishes QA standards and practices for a team. Serves as the quality authority for a domain, drives major incident response, and collaborates with leadership on quality metrics and AI tooling strategy.
Success Metrics
- 30 days: First test plan written and approved, initial automated tests integrated into the CI pipeline, and understanding of critical user journeys achieved.
- 60 days: Independent ownership of quality for a feature, stable automation suite, and first contribution to incident response.
- 90 days: Active contribution to test strategy discussions and independent handling of developer escalations within your area.
On-Call
Participate in a shared engineering on-call rotation (approximately 1 week per month after ramp-up). QA on-call responsibilities focus on blast radius assessment and regression testing during incidents.
