Job Overview
You will be responsible for end-to-end quality across ThriveCart's e-commerce platform, encompassing test strategy, automation, defect prevention, and production health monitoring. This role is not about merely executing test cases; you will own the quality for your domain.
AI is an integral part of our workflow, not an optional skill. It is used for generating test cases, creating test data, drafting test plans, and accelerating automation. We are hiring for judgment: the ability to discern which tests are crucial, understand risk, and critically evaluate AI-generated output.
What You'll Own
Test Strategy & Planning
- Own the quality strategy for your features and domain, including test plans, risk assessment, and coverage decisions.
- Identify ambiguities and testability gaps during requirements review, proactively addressing them before code development (shift-left quality).
- Define acceptance criteria in collaboration with Product teams.
- Balance manual exploration with automated regression coverage.
- Document test plans, coverage decisions, and known risk areas for asynchronous team visibility.
Test Automation
- Write and maintain automated tests (API, integration, end-to-end) utilizing the team's established frameworks.
- Ensure automation suites are fast, reliable, and maintainable; address flaky tests promptly.
- Maintain CI/CD integration for efficient test execution.
Production Quality & Incident Response
- Monitor features in production using observability tools, recognizing that quality extends beyond release.
- Respond to developer escalations and incidents with urgency: assess blast radius, conduct targeted regression testing, assist in isolating root cause, and communicate findings clearly.
AI-Augmented QA (Expected, Not Optional)
- Utilize AI tools daily for generating test cases and data, drafting test plans, analyzing bug patterns, and accelerating automation writing.
- Prioritize AI-generated test cases ruthlessly based on risk, as AI may produce more than necessary.
- Critically review all AI-generated test output, understanding that AI lacks product context, which you provide.
Defect Advocacy & Communication
- Write clear, reproducible bug reports that enable developers to act immediately.
- Advocate for quality by flagging risks pre-release, documenting known issues, and explicitly stating what is and isn't tested.
Collaboration
- Work closely with developers to enhance testability at the code level.
- Assist developers in writing more effective unit tests by identifying untested scenarios.
What You Bring To This Role
Technical Environment
- Testing: API testing (Postman/REST clients), browser automation (Playwright), unit/integration test frameworks.
- CI/CD: GitHub Actions (tests run on every PR).
- Observability: AWS CloudWatch, application logs, metrics dashboards.
- Platform stack: PHP/TypeScript, Ruby/TypeScript, MariaDB, Redis, AWS.
- Playwright is our standard framework for browser automation; strong testing fundamentals are paramount.
Must-haves
- Strong testing fundamentals: test strategy, test case design, risk-based prioritization.
- Hands-on automation experience with Playwright.
- Comfort with API testing (Postman/REST clients) and reading application logs.
- Current use of, or genuine motivation to use, AI tools in a QA workflow.
- Clear written communication for bug reports and test plans that facilitate action without meetings.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience testing e-commerce, payments, or subscription platforms.
- Familiarity with PHP, TypeScript, or Ruby codebases.
- AWS/CloudWatch or similar observability tooling.
- GitHub Actions or another CI/CD pipeline.
Expectations by Level
- L1 (Junior QA) — 0–1 yrs: Executes test plans, writes simple automation with guidance, reports bugs clearly. Bootcamp, internship, or early professional QA experience is acceptable; we value rigor and curiosity over tenure. Uses AI to accelerate learning and generate test cases, validating all AI output.
- L2 (QA Engineer 1) — 1–3 yrs: Has independently owned quality for a feature or product area, building test plans and suites rather than just extending existing ones. Writes comprehensive test plans and automation, and responds to incidents with targeted testing.
- L3 (Senior QA) — 3–6 yrs: Has led incident response from the QA perspective and mentored other QAs. Owns quality strategy for complex projects, improves automation architecture and infrastructure, and leverages AI to multiply output beyond individual task acceleration.
- L4 (Lead QA) — 6+ yrs: Has established QA standards or practices for a team, not merely followed them. Serves as the quality authority for a domain, drives major incident response, and collaborates with leadership on quality metrics and AI tooling strategy.
Success Metrics
- 30 days: First test plan written and approved, first automated tests in CI pipeline, understanding of critical user journeys.
- 60 days: Independently owning quality for a feature, stable automation suite, first incident response contribution.
- 90 days: Contributing to test strategy discussions, independently handling developer escalations in your area.
On-Call
Shared rotation with engineering (approximately 1 week/month after ramp-up). QA on-call responsibilities focus on blast radius assessment and regression testing during incidents.
