Your mission
As a Principal Engineer within the Ops Hub at Bitpanda, you will design, build, and evolve mission-critical systems supporting our onboarding, compliance, and risk infrastructure at scale. You will serve as a hands-on technical authority, shaping architecture, driving engineering excellence, and resolving complex technical challenges related to customer registration, login experience, onboarding, and verification infrastructure.
You will act as a force multiplier for the Ops Hub by actively coding, setting technical direction, and elevating standards for quality, resilience, performance, and security across teams. Collaboration with senior engineers, engineering managers, and cross-functional stakeholders (Regulatory Onboarding, Compliance, Fraud & Risk Ops, Finance) is key to ensuring systems are future-proof, compliant, and capable of supporting Bitpanda's continued growth.
What you'll do
- Own and evolve the architecture of highly available, distributed, event-driven backend systems across the Ops Hub.
- Lead the technical design and delivery of complex, cross-team initiatives in onboarding, compliance, and risk infrastructure.
- Actively write and review production code, setting a high bar for quality, testing, reliability, and operational excellence.
- Drive architectural decision-making through clear technical proposals, ADRs and close collaboration with stakeholders.
- Mentor and guide senior engineers, acting as a technical reference point and raising the overall engineering standard.
Who you are
- Deep expertise in backend software engineering using Java and Spring Boot, with a strong track record of delivering business-critical systems at scale (experience with PHP is beneficial but not essential).
- Extensive experience designing and operating distributed, event-driven microservices architectures (Kafka or similar).
- Deep understanding of data modelling and persistence using relational and non-relational databases (e.g., Postgres, MongoDB).
- Comfortable operating autonomously across multiple teams, navigating ambiguity and driving technical clarity.
- Highly collaborative, able to influence without formal authority and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
