The Role

We are seeking an Engineering Manager to join Agilio, taking ownership of several engineering teams and products. This broad role will likely involve working across 3–4 engineering teams and approximately 6 products, requiring comfort in balancing priorities and strategic focus.

Agilio has grown substantially over the past seven years through the acquisition of around 20 businesses. This has resulted in a large and diverse portfolio of healthcare software, with products at various stages of maturity, built using different technologies and architectures.

We are actively investing in modernizing and consolidating our technology, enhancing our software development and operational practices, and exploring how AI can transform our engineering teams' workflows. This presents exciting engineering challenges and ample opportunities to influence the future technological direction of Agilio.

Key Responsibilities

You will be responsible for the people, delivery, and engineering health of your assigned teams and products.

• Collaborate closely with Engineering, Product, and business stakeholders to align priorities, solve problems, and make informed decisions regarding engineering investment.
• Lead, coach, and develop engineers across your teams.
• Support Lead Engineers and other technical leaders in taking ownership and leading effectively.
• Work with Product to shape priorities, plans, and the long-term direction of your products.
• Build strong cross-business relationships and represent Engineering in product-related decisions.
• Own the technical direction and architecture across your products, ensuring technical decisions align with the wider technology strategy.
• Understand the technical health of your products, including security, reliability, performance, maintainability, and technical debt.
• Ensure technical risks and investment needs are understood and integrated into plans alongside product and customer priorities.
• Help teams create realistic delivery plans, manage dependencies, and identify risks early.
• Remove blockers and make decisions/trade-offs when teams require support.
• Improve engineering practices such as automated testing, CI/CD, observability, security, and operating software in production.
• Facilitate the practical use of AI across the software development lifecycle and share best practices within Engineering.
• Collaborate with other Engineering Managers and technical leaders to solve common problems, align technical approaches, and reduce unnecessary duplication.
• Recruit and onboard engineers as teams expand.
• Contribute to engineering initiatives spanning multiple teams and products.

You must be comfortable with technology. While not making every technical decision, you will be accountable for your area's technical direction. This requires understanding critical decisions, challenging where necessary, and ensuring choices benefit beyond individual teams or products. You will also know when to empower and trust the engineers closest to the problem.

Our Technology

Our technology stack reflects the diverse products integrated into Agilio. Most software is .NET, with some products built using PHP and Python. Our offerings are primarily web-based, featuring a mix of server-side rendered applications and SPAs, alongside a smaller number of mobile applications developed with Flutter.

Currently, our products operate across Microsoft Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud, with Azure designated as our strategic cloud platform moving forward. A key opportunity involves evolving this estate, making sensible decisions about standardization and consolidation while continuously supporting and enhancing the products our customers rely on today.

Essential

• Proven experience leading and developing multiple software engineering teams.
• Previous experience in an Engineering Manager, Software Development Manager, Head of Engineering, or similar leadership role.
• Experience collaborating closely with Product teams and business stakeholders to prioritize work and balance competing demands.
• Strong understanding of modern software development practices, including Agile delivery methodologies.
• Experience overseeing the technical direction of products and making decisions related to architecture, security, scalability, reliability, and technical debt.
• Ability to identify, assess, and manage technical and delivery risks.
• Experience coaching, mentoring, and developing engineers and technical leaders.
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to influence at all organizational levels.
• Experience managing products or platforms across a varied technology estate.
• Good understanding of cloud-based software environments (Azure, AWS, or GCP).
• Experience improving engineering practices such as CI/CD, automated testing, observability, and secure software development.
• Ability to make pragmatic decisions and trade-offs in complex technical environments.
• Right to work in the UK.
