We’re growing, and we’re looking for a skilled WordPress developer to bring on as an independent contractor for client project work.
This is a hands-on, execution-focused contract engagement. You’ll work directly on client projects alongside the founder, building custom WordPress themes and plugins, optimizing site performance, and writing clean, well-documented code. Some parts of this role will be client-facing, so clear communication, independent problem-solving, and proactively flagging blockers are essential skills.
Engagements are project-based with a scope and timeline defined for each project. We’ll typically start with a single well-defined project to establish a working rhythm. Contractors who are a strong fit can expect recurring work as capacity allows.
- Build and customize WordPress themes and plugins from scratch and within existing codebases
- Write semantic, well-structured HTML with accessibility in mind
- Optimize webpages for Core Web Vitals, frontend performance, and server response times
- Work within tools like the Block Editor (Gutenberg/FSE), Advanced Custom Fields, and WooCommerce
- Write clean, commented, maintainable code
- Collaborate asynchronously via Slack and Asana
Must-Haves
- 3+ years of professional WordPress development experience
- Strong PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript skills (comfortable working in existing codebases, not just new builds)
- Writes clean, semantic HTML (proactive accessibility awareness is a plus)
- Demonstrated experience optimizing Core Web Vitals and performance metrics (LCP, CLS, INP)
- Fluent with the Block Editor and at least familiar with Full Site Editing
- Strong async communication skills: you write clearly, respond in a reasonable timeframe, and don’t go dark mid-project
- Ability to self-manage and deliver on time with minimal supervision
Nice-to-Haves
- Experience with ACF (Advanced Custom Fields) and WooCommerce
- Familiarity with WCAG guidelines, ARIA patterns, and accessible HTML practices
- Familiarity with performance tooling like Lighthouse, WebPageTest, or GTmetrix
- Experience working within agency or multi-client environments
- 1099 independent contractor engagement: project-based scope, no fixed hours or schedule
- Fully remote; US-based candidates only
- $55–$75/hour depending on experience
- Async-first workflow with occasional video calls for project kickoffs or reviews
- A technical founder who is hands-on, direct, and cares about building long-term working relationships
